This Is a beautiful country. While you Raleigh people were swel tering in heat last week I was wearing CONCERNING THE PRICE OF TOBACC s Farmers Deluged With Advice and Suggestions An intelligent farmer was discussing the existing conditions on account of Jow-price'd tobacco yesterday afternoon. Among other things he said: "Some people say that the remedy for I the low price of tobacco is not yet in sight, and that the meeting recently held at Kocky Mount and the plan proposed can only help as it builds up the Farmers' J'rotective Association, chartered by the last legislature: and that even then It Is a matter of a long time. The organization and meth ods proposed will require much time and a long, steady pull." Continuing, he said the main question was whether the farmers would stand together In the necessary effort and be content to wait for results. s Under the heading, "The Tobacco ... , : j I A Raleigh Vfp UKE IIS a fi COOPER BHOS. afeff , j Proprietor. - fb MONUMENTS lM Wrlt for catatosnL Vt W py th fr!cb- - 1 Do e'asdnable Spices, asoeable Prices EVERYTHING- YOU NEED for THIS SEASON OF PICS LING-, PRESERVING- and CANNING. "Under such circumstances It is cer tainly the part of wisdom for the to bacco giowers of North Carolina to move prudently In their further opera tions with the plant, if they would avoid serious embarrassment. "Undoubtedly prices are far below the real value of the weed and very probably they are lower , than they would be were there competitors of the trust on the market. But may it not be that there is another important cle ment in the situation to be considered? "The news comes from the important markets in the eastern part of the state that the American Tobacco Company has immense quantities of last year's crop on hand. One correspondent says that the trust has great quantities of leaf tobacco still on hand, and that It is known that practically all of the im mense purchases made lastr year by both the American and English com panies on the Greenville and Klnston markets are still stored in' the ware- Oreat September bale of Carpets and. In point of vari ety, superior excellence, beauty of pattern and colorings, as well as durability, these Carpets and Hugs are easily all that the most exacting housekeeper can desire We name some of the Bargain Carpets. There are other, lines-just as worthy your attention "VELVETS S1.25 bright tobacco towns. Also a buyer at Louisburg Is quoted as saying that the American company paid tax on $50,000 worth at that place. The government reports, too, indicate that there are im mense quantities of the leaf stored away. They show that last year S02 million pounds were produced. Of this 312 million pounds only were manufac tured. The remainder, less what was exported. Is left In the packing houses.! It then resolves Itself simply lto a case of over-supply and the farmer must govern himself aeeordinglj'. Un der such circumstances, the course of wisdom for the farmer is, in the first place, not to rush his present crop to market. If the trust is forced to buy tobacco when it does not want it, na turally It will not pay so much as it would thirty or sixty daj-s later. And as to the future, if the trust renders the production of tobacco unprofitable, produce something else. There are other things that wll pay even better than tobacco when tobacco prices are regarded as fairly good. These simple but effective remedies every farmer has In his hands, and can apply them whether he has the co-operation and assistance of others or not."
