Duncan went to Charlotte yesterday on a business trip. ! Dr. Hubert A. Rbyster left yesterday , for Atlanta, Ga., to attend a meeting of the Southern Surgical Association. Examinations have begun ut the A. sund M. College. The Christmas holi days begin next Tuesday, December 22. The wife of Rev. K. C. Holt, the pr- siding elder of the Raleigh district A. M. E. church, died Sunday. The fun eral -was held yesterday and the re mains were sent to Mebane for burial. Mr. W. M. Tucker, who has for the past ten months held a position in the C. B. Crowell drug store, left yesterday , or Wadesboro where he has accepted a. similar position. The funeral of Miss Elizabeth Pow ers was held Sunday afternoon foui miles-west of here at the family place. Her age waa 94 years, and she was a Bister of Mr. Thomas Powers of Ra icigh. Mr. Robt. C. Strong went to Greens boro yesterday to argue for the defend ant in the suit of Keck against the . Southern Bell Telephone Company. The plaintiff, an employe of the company, was injured in an. accident and sues for $5,000. Mr. Ed Chambers Smith and Mr. John Faison have returned from a week's hunt with relatives in Cran ville county. The party had splendid luck. They killed a deer, weighing 150 pounds, several turkeys and a quantity of quail. The will of the late Mrs. Margaret T. Shipp was probated before Clerk of the Court W. M. Russ yesterday. The - property, both real and personal, is left to her daughter, Miss Mary P. Shipp, and Mr. Jas. I. Johnson is made executor. -..JDr. R. H. Lewis, president of the State board of health, went to Eur lington yesterday to hold a conference with the aldermen, at the latter's re quest, regarding smallpox. One case i3 reported at Burlington, but Dr. Lewis is informed that there are 30 or 40 cases near Haw River. Dr. Lewis will return today. Mr. J. W. Denmark returned yester day from the Baptist state convention where he figured in a pleasant reunipn of "two-thirds of the class of 1877 at Wake Forest. The members of the class at the convention were Rev. Dr. E. E. Folk, editor of the Baptist Reflector of Nashville and brother of the re former in St. Louis; Rev. Chas. W. Scarborough of Murfreesboro, Prof. W. L. Poteat of "Wake Forest, and Mr. J. W. Denmark, business manager of the Progressive Farmer. PERSONALS Mr. B. L. Green of Warrenton is. in town. Mr. W- G.
