Wall street's Opening prices of stocks today broke with great violence with the exception of support for Amalgamated Copper, which was lifted a point over last night on sales of 8,000 shares. First sales ran as high as 30,000 shares in United States Steel, 10,000 shares in United States Steel preferred, 8,000 shares in Union Pacific and 6,000 shares in Erie. The break in United States Steel preferred was 2, Union Pacific 2, Erie 2, Bal timore & Ohio 2 5-8, Sugar 2 1-4, .Mis souri Pacific 2, Smelting 2 1-8 and the majority of the active" stocks 1 tOl 3-4. In the frightened unloading of tha opening dealings there were such fur ther breaks as Allis-Chalmers 9, Pull man 7, Delaware & Hudson 3, Tennes see Coal 3 1-4, Great Northern preferr ed 4, New York Air Brake 8, The determined support of Amalga mated Copper which lifted it 3 po'nts over last night, induced a; rush' to cover on the part of the bears, and vio lent rallies ensued, which extended all through the list and were of very, sub stantial proportions. Atchison, Union Pacific, Mis souri Pacific, Pacific Mail and Brooklyn Transit rose one point over last night, Northwestern I 1-4, and Paper and Col orado Fuel 1 3-4. Amalgamated Cop per touched 65 3-8. Bonds were weak with some recovery at noon. The absence of new pressure of stock encouraged renewed bidding up, and top prices were made for Pennsylvania, Tennessee Coal and United States Steel stocks. Additional over-night gaina reached 1 to 1 1-4 in Pennsylvania, St. "Paul, Wabash, United States Steel and Tennessee Coal. The United States iSteel stocks brought 28 and 88 respectively, and Union Pacific touched 103iV- Occasional reductions occurred during the after noon, but the general tendency was still upward.
