Ofiioifibii, Friday, may a, ib9o. m , in . LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. T 1 1 K H K IM T II L 1 CAN PRUGRA 31 .! E. The llfiil Soldier do Not Endorse ltd' Knolutiomtry Tin-tic, or the Indignity Heaped Upon Grant's Name. Special Cor. of Statk Chkoniclk.) Washington, I). C, April 30, 18D0. The banquet given by the American Club at Pitt&burg Saturday night in honor of tho birthday anniversary of General Grant was turned by Reed, (Juay, and others into a political caucus whose ob ject was to lolster up Reed's personal ambition! A great deal of unfavorable comment ia being made here upon that phase of tho affair. Many old soldiers are out spoken in condemnation of the indignity that they declaro has been heaped upon the name of one of the country's great soldiers. The almost complete ignoring of hiji was bad enough, they say, but it was adding insult to injury to drag his uame through the mire of the kind of politics represented by the principal speeches of the evening. Aside from these sentimental considerations, the outcome of the meeting is looked for ward to now with a great deal of inter est. The purely partisan character of the affair is recognized as being beyond dispute, aud much surprise is manifest ed th;it such a low toue should color it. The meaning of the whole business can ii ! Ik- doubted. Speaker Reed is a can didate for the I'resi leney on the plat form f Federal supervision of elections, ij lay proposes to remain in the saddle With an eye less to the interests of Har rison now than to those of Reed two years hence. That is the feeling here to day, and that was tho tenor of much of the private conversation at the banquet l;it evening. I am reminded in this connection of .ni incident ia the hfe of General Grant. Soon after the memorable day at Appo in itox. (irant was on Pennsylvania ave nu; when a friend told him that An drew Johnson intended to revoke the pa roirt of General Robert K.Lee, and other Southern Generals. Grant said noth iug. but instantly mounted his horse, which was hitched near by, and gal loped off towards the White House, Them a stormy scene ensued. Johnson admitted the truth of the rumor. J rant quietly faced him and said: "Do it if jou dare, sir! When you attempt it, J will protect their paroles at the head oi tho army the United States." This is to day the animus of the men who did the lighting Heed's conduct linds its exponent in the cravens who would rend the Union for the realization of a petty, personal ambition. Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant even Charles sr.muor would blush for the weak ling and villains who claim to be the leaders of tho O. O. I, to-day. 'I ho negroes aro becoming ashamed of their now masters, and the signs of the times poiut to tho appearance of many colored Moses in the next campaign, win mo mission it will be to lead their rre from under tho yoke of the uu crapulous white demagogues who have i jled them with false promises for a putter of a century. This much-talked-of Federal election law is a bid for negro votes. The bid will fall far short of its mark. Twenty-five years of free dom has enlarged the negroes' ideas. Advantages of education has taught him to thiuk. lie knows that his race porpctuates the dominance of the Re publican party to-day. He knows that in spite of this fuct, his raco has not been the beneficiary of one hundredth part of the patronage of the party now :n power. The blue book of Benjamin Harrison's administration is living evi dence of this. Tho case of tho Stato of North Caro lina vs. A. II. Temple was decided in favor of tho State, 3d March, 1890. On April 28th, 1890, E. L Andrews mado motion to modify the decree of March oj, which motion has not yet been act ted unon by the court. It may be de cided next Monday, or May 19th. I learn the probabilities are that tho Su premo Court will not modify the decree When Andrews made his motion the tato was represented by Hon. John W. Grahum, of ilillsboro. " -- A KRENTO.VN PROSPERITY. It Harkbone is it Tobacco Interest- En la rpemcut of Warehoue(-A New )letliodit Church, Etc. (Special Cor. of State Chroniclk.1 IVarrenton, N. C, April 29. War ronton, the county seat of Warren, ia situated in a hilly section of the coun try, a miles South of the R. & G. R. R., and is the terminus of the .Warrenton railroad, which taps the R. & G. at War ro u Plains, it is located in the Golden Tobacco Belt of North Carolina, and in one of tho moat beautiful and healthy sec tious to be founi in the State. The drainage of the town is perfect and the scenery beautiful, lne sou or its adia Mint country cannot be surpassed for fertility and adaptability for the auler viit products, such as corn, wheat, grass, oats. Krapes, tooacco, etc. Not a summer passes by that the ho tels, boarding houses and many private dwellings are not filled with visitors from the Northern cities, and with health seekers from the Eastern sections of this Stato and from V lrginia. The tobacco interest of the town is its backbone. There are two large tobacco warehouses here that sell annually U.OQO.000 pounds; and, with a largely increased area to be planted this year in the .section contiguous to this market, 4,000,000 pounds will be marketed here from the 1800 crop. Taking into con sideration the age of the market, there is not one in tho State that sells more of tho golden weed. Owing to tho already large and in rcasiug trade which they have ever :a joyed since the beginning of their concern, Boyd & Rogers, the leading warehousemen of the town, have found it nccesiary to enlarge their present warehouse capacity, and, accordingly, eontracts were signed a few days ago tor the extension of the same. The ex tension will be C0xl05, making the building, after completion, 60x219. Much credit is due this live, pushing firm for the solid market already estab lished here, which adds so much to the convenience of tho tobacco planters of Warren, Halifax and Nash counties, this Stato, and of Mecklenburg and Bruns wick counties, Virginia. t . White & Allen, proprietors of Arring warehouse, one of the largest and , in the State, also aniov r -J a large and increasing trade, and are ever watchful of their patrons Interests. Several large prize houses have been recently erected, and plans are now being consummated for the building of halfadczen more this Summer. Tho demand ia greater than the supply. A 4,000 brick Methodist church on one of tho most beautiful sites in the town will soon be under head-way. The banking house of W. P. Baugh ani, though recently established, is doing a satisfactory business, and en joys the patronage and confidence of the town and surrounding country. Mr. Arthur Arrington, secretary of the Southern Inter-State Immigration Jiureau, with headquarters at Raleigh, was here last week for the purpose of securing the co-operation of our people in the work of his association, the ob ject of which being to aid in the devel opment and upbuilding of the town and county. Arrangements were made with H. A. and W. B. Boyd, who will push the work for all it is worth. SP&ING AND SUMMER - - , ' MILLINERY MS ! I HIGH NOVELTIES IN TRIMMED AND UNTRIMMED GOODS. Ob servation teaches, or certainly indicates, that every community feels a pardona ble pride in the career of its distin guished citizens. Such feelings are per fectly excusable, and I presume not en tirely unknown in the capital city. Acting upon this presumption, it is my purpose simply to report, for your gratification, the impres.sion and repu tation that one of your distinguished sons, Judge Whitaker, is making in the East. During his circuit of the first district, the writer has thus far observed him during the courts of three counties. To say that he has given satisfaction as a presiding officer would fall far short of justice, for within my recollection, not one of his predecessors as good as they have been has ever been more prompt in the orderly dispatch of busi ness, more impartial and consistent in his rulings, or more justly esteemed for his character as a man, and ability as a jurist. My impressions are tinged by no pre conceived partiality, for until this spring the writer had no personal acquaint ance with Judge Whitaker, and had known him only by reputation as a loy al, unselfish Democrat. In this capac ity he is known by all who remember the vigor and skill with which he guid ed the last State campaign. He has served the State ably and well in both capacities, and merits recognition and approval. His judicial life has just be gun, bat promises a fruitage that will be rich in honors to himself and the State. The writer in common, he be lieves, with theentiro citizenship oi the First District, heartily recommends Judge Whitaker, as his own successor, and regrets that there is a disposition on tho part of any one to supeicde him. Heha3done his duty here, and done it well. Why not let him stay where he is? Orders from a distance will receive prompt attention. Prices reasonable and satisfaction guar anteed at Miss Maggie Reese's, 209 Fayetteville St. Best 6-Cord Spool Cotton. No ; you can put it in the washtub no metal in it or on it. - - --- It is worth your seeing, if for nothing but how to sew on buttons to button easy and never come off, and how to make buttonholes wear for ever. W omen differ in their ways of thinking and dressing as well as in other ways. This waist is for women whose minds are made up that they won't wear corsets. There's much to be said on both sides ; but did you ever hear of a woman who hadn't made up her mind in some way? and is there any possible use in trying to get her to change it? She will i and she will ; or she won't and she won't. I You can get the Ball Waist and wear it a week or two or three; and, if you don't want it, bring it back to us and get your money. W. It. & R.
