STATE OHKOOTbLE, DOTOSEB 15, BALEIQH IN BBIEF. LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND AUOUND THE CAPITAL. CO:iII?(J AND GOING. Know and Short Items of News Gathered on the Fly by the Chronicle's Reporters. The weekly meeting of the Y. M. D. 0., will be postponed from Thursday night to some night next week. Don't fail to go to the "Confederate Concert" tonight, for the benefit of the Soldiers'. Home. The "Raleigh orchestra will assist the ladies in their concert to night. Admission to the Concert 50 and 75 cents. No extra charges for reserved seats. Box sheet now open at A. Williams &Co's book store, and Lee, Johnson & Co's. drug store. One of the most attractive and inter esting features on the Fair grounds is the Japanese village. It has novelties that entertain everybody. Don't fail to see it. The German given by the Monogram club lat night wa3 a recherche and ele gant affair, and was participated in by representatives of the elite of many sec tions of the State. The piano playing of Mr. Mcllenry, who is in charge of the instrument?! exhibit of Manly B. ttamos & Co , of Kichmond, was very much enjoved yes terday by many people. Just remember the Confederate con cert at Metropolitan hall to-night. Get tickets at A. Williams & Co's bookstore, or Lee. Johnson & Co's druer store. It will be a pleasant aflair for everybody. It is beiDg remarked that a prominent railroad man has been "run in a hole" in connection with the new depot scheme. The facts can't be well pub lished, but the Chronicle will tell any body about it who feels interested enough to inquire about it. Messrs. Eberhardt & Pescud are two young, hvo business men. They are branching out in business. They have gone to taking and filling army contracts, and yesterday they shipped a large lot of North Carolina fish to Fort Leaven worth, Kansas, for theU. S. Army. There will be a basket pic-nic in the interest of the Alliance order at Holly Springs, Wake county, on Friday, Oc tober 24th. Competent speakers will be present to address the audience on tho principles and iuterests of the fra ternity. All are invited to participate m the pleasures of the occasion. On Sunday Rev. Jno. N. Cole, of War renton, preached twice at Central Meth odist church, and two admirable ser mons they were. The one at night which we heard, was a sermon to remember a life time. Earnest, practical, strong and full of power, it was a truly great ser mon, and marked the preacher as a man of no ordinary intellectual power. Messrs. W. C. & A B. Stronach will close up their large grocery establish ment on Thursday from 11 a. m. to 5 p m. to give all the employees a day at the fair. This is a firm which does'nt wait to see what other people are going to do. It goes ahead and does the right thing regardless of anybody elses actions, and it is consequently the biggest and most prosperous grocery house in the State. Two of the be3t lawyers in Eastern North Carolina spent Sunday in Ral eigh. In tho morning they heard Rev. Dr. Cordon at Edenton Street Methodist church; in Upo afternoon Rev. Dr. Wat kins at the First Presbyterian church; at night Rev. Dr. Carter at the First Bap tist church. They tell the Chronicle that they did not believe there were three such able preachers in the pulpits in North Carolina. They were so charm ed that we believo if they had free passes they would come to Raleigh every San day to hear these divines. Rahigh is fortunate in its preachers, and vq have others who arc esteemed quite as highly as the throe gentlemen named. A NEGRO POW-WOW. Some ol The Folks Ycu Their Doings. Gen. Wm. Oae negro spek very loudly in favor of Charlie Upchurch, Adams and Rog ers, and said he was for no other ddrn men. He said he was for Upchurch be cause Upchurch has "turned from His own and come to us," and that Up church would lead the ticket from the north pole to the south pole. He hoped the day would come "when we can have negroes in office in Wake county, but Lane, (negro independent candidate for Clerk of the Superior Court) must wait." He said he was for Argo because Argo was for him and his race. He helped them once aud would do it again. And thus it went ou, a lot of greasy ignorant negroes congregate and howl out that they are for a man about whom ugly reports have been made; for a man who is charged with collecting costs (for tax) out of people before such costs were due f era mau who aided to bur den the people of this State with $38, 000,000 of special tax bonds, the money for which went no man knows where.
