He referred to the New York, Virginia and North Carolina daily papers, and said with few exceptions all devoted their space to scandals He replied to the Danville' Va., Register by saying that its editor "would haveenough to do the balance of his days to rub hia blood-stained hands of the mur der of Rev. John F. Moff tt, who was killed by the Danville whiskey ring, of which the Register was the great exponent." "The Charlotte Ob server," said Broughton, "calls me a blackguard. In love but candor, I say that it is a flatfooted lie. There are a few honest journalists, but it takes a nne-t oth comb to find them They are few and far be tween." Broughton's harrangue has been the talk of the town today. The other ministers here deprecate the course he has pursued and are free to express themselves. White Miller, colored, killed him self instantly in Lexington Saturday night by placing the muzzle of a pistol to his right jaw. It is not known whether it was a suicide or accidental. Dr. Smith called on the patient at 10:30 this morning and remained half an hour. When Dr. Smith came out he said : "Booth's condition is the same. He rested well all night He takes nourishment naturally. His head is clear, and he recognizes his friends. His speech is somewhat affected and he does talk much. He seems to realize his position;' but does not say much about it The case is not necessarily a fatal one, but if Booth has another one of the attacks he cnnot possibly live through it." Dr. Smith denied that there had been any consultation of physicians la&t night about Booth's case. Mrs Grossman, Booth s daughter, is with him constantly, and there are many callers this morning. Booth's Condition Yet Favorable. By Southern Associated Pi ess. New York, April 24. Edwin Booth's condition was improved his afternoon.
