FERGUSON Texans Surprised and Indignant at Granting of Pardon to Roman Priest ASSAULTED LITTLE GIRL Had Pleaded Guilty to Charge and Was Serving Prison Sentence of One Year Gonzales, Texas. — Thousands of Texans were amazed and became in dignant recently when it was an nounced that Governor Perugson had issued a pardon to A. Huebsch, Ro man Catholic priest, who was serv ing a sentence of one year for crimi nal assault on a girl under the age ef consent. One of the principal arguments against the election of Governor “Ma” Ferguson was the record established hy her husband, James Ferguson, when he was governor, in pardoning criminals. It was pointed out that in the event of Mrs. Ferguson’s election, the same practice might be employed. But a few weeks had elapsed after her inauguration when the pardon was issued setting Huebsch at lib erty. The case of this Roman prelate was a very prominent one here nearly four years ago. Huebsch wras priest of a Roman Catholic church with mostly. Bohemians as parishioners His misconduct was first ascertained when a young girl who had been go ing with a class to the priest’s house for instructions in catchechism, re fused tp go any more. Girl’s Story When pressed for her reasons, she told her mother o f the ilberties the priest had taken with her. Inquiry indicated that Huebsch has taken sim ilar liberties with other young girls in his church. The uproar which fol (Continued on page 5) DR. J. H. HAWKINS ADDRESSES CROWD AT DURH AM, N. C. Klan Lecturer Shows Alarming Conditions In The Country By Rex T. Lewis Durham, N. C., Feb. 12.—More than one thousand men and women assembled at the courthouse tonight to hear the nationally known Klan lec turer review the essential principles of the Ku Klux Klan and give impor tant information of special interest to our people in North Carolina. In part he stated that membership in the Klan means service and sacri five—sacrifice for the right and serv ice to that which is right, using as an illustration that when our forefathers realized as a fact that there could be no happiness under the tyranny of a government controlled by the church, they braved the dangers of the At lantic, faced the terrors of an un tamed wilderness to gain political and religious freedom. He claimed that as surely as there had never been a ship wrecked on Plymouth Rocjc, just so certain it was there never will be a “shp wreck” on the principles which moved the Pilgrim Fathers to seek self-imposed exile. Reviewing the foreign population of our states he gave statistics show ing that of the 48 states in the Union 50 per cent, of the population of 13 of those states are aliens; that of the 105,000,000 people in the United States 13,712,754 are foreign born; 15,694,695 born in this country were of foreign parentage; that 6,991,663 were of mixed parentage, either father or mother alien, making up a total of first and second generation foreigners of white blood of 36,398, 958. He showed that of different bloods this country contains 10,463, 131 negroes, 426,754 Indians, orientals and Asiatics. The wily Jesuit is everywhere, creeping and skulking when the numerical value of his Roman Catholic dupes will not permit him to walk erect; but stalking abroad in full daylight, making use of his most potent wea pon, the boycott, on all his opponents in order to bludgeon his way to suc cess whenever and wherever he can gain political control. Especially does this apply in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and more so in the city of Boston where the cradle of liberty was rocked and where the blood of the martyrs of the Boston massacre dyed the soil. Jeremiah Burke, the Roman Catholic superintendent of Public Schools for the city of Boston, has flooded the school rooms with papal teachers, not withstanding the fact that his Jesuit masters have publicly declared their intention to destroy the public schools of this Nation. In School Document No. 10, pre pared by Rose A. Carrigan, Master of Shurtleff School, Boston, and issued by the School Committee over the sig nature of Ellen M. Cronin, Secre tary, entitled “Course in Citizenship Through Character Development,” appears a' list of books recommended to be read by the pupils of grades from one to eight in the grammar sc hools. In the forefront of this re markable document the statement is made that valuable suggestions have been received from Jeremiah E. Burke, Superintendent of Schools for Boston, and Joseph J. Reilly, Superin tendent of Schools for* Ware, Mass., while John Aj O’Shea, Director of Music, Boston Public Schools, Mar garet A. Sheridan, Librarian of the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library, and Alice A. Jordan, Supervisor of Work with Children, Boston Public Library, rendered val uable assistance in suggesting addi tional stories for children. Suggested Books Among the books suggested for study by children in the grammar school grades appear the following Catholic Encyclopedia. Lives of the Saints for Children, by Chenowith, Catholic Heroes, by Murray, Father Damien, Saint Patrick, by Tappan, Saint Francis of Assissi, by Brown, Saint Columba, by Lang; Story of Ireland’s Devotion to Nationality, and many others, all showing the fine Italian hand of the Jesuit priest in his efforts to papalize the public schools of oBtson. On page 92 of this papal document appears a very significant foot note worthy of quot ing: “The teacher is urgently requested to substitute or to add her own orig inal notes for discussion, to originate activities which she believes will be fruitful, and to make use of any points in teaching of various school subjects which appeal to her as par ticularly adaptable for influencing pu pils to admire and practice a given virtue.” With about seventy-five per cent of the teachers in the public schools of Boston recruited from the ranks of the papal church, it can be readily seen how the opportunities for Ro man Catholic propaganda and promul gation of the faithi will be quickly grasped. No one knows the impres sionability of the plastic mind of a (Continued on page 4) L>K. J. H. FOURTH DEGREE CASEYS PLAN TO CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY Prominent Papists Reveal True Purposes of the Roman Catholic Order—True Citizenship Opposed to American Government— Priest Phelan Again Brooklyn, N. Y.—The Long Island Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, are planning to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the military department of that order on February 22. In their preliminary announcements in the Romanized press of New York, the usual protestations of extreme patriotism are set forth as funda mental precepts of Columbianism, and the Fourth Degree is referred to as the “patriotic branch” of the order. One hundred per cent American pa triotism is claimed for the founders and members of the Fourth Degree, and the “bloody oath” which has been so closely associated with their order in public and private controversy is denied flatly. According to the an nouncements, the Knights of Colum bus is a society organized to propa gate Catholic citizenship, and the Fourth Degre is the purely patriotic rank. In the statement that the Knights of Columbus is organized to foster “Catholic citizenship” lies the real danger to America. It all depends upon what is called Catholic citi ship.” No doubt the Roman hier archy intends the heretical Protes tants shall under this to mean that they are using the Casey order to make good Amercans out of their Catholic members. That is the cam ouflage. That is the “mask” worn by the Romanists while protesting so loudly against the masked hood of the Ku Klux Klan. Catholic Citizenship Research into papal teachings re veals what Rome means by Catholic citizenship. In explaining why the nations of the world fear Rome so greatly, Priest Phelan said it is be cause they know what “the Catholic Church “means. They know that “the Catholic Church” means all of the Catholics of the world; not one coun try, or two countries, but all the coun tries of the world.” Catholic citizenship, then, using their own definition, means citizenship in the Roman Catholic Empire, and carries a denial of citizenship bind ing in any way to nay civil govern ment. This being the case, for Priest Phelan was a leader in the papal hier arcry, the better “Catholic citizen” a Casey becomes the less is he bound by any ties of allegiance to the Unit ed States, and the less an American citizen he becomes. COOLIDGE DELIVERS ADDRESS BEFORE EDITORS Appeals To Idealism As Real Pathway To Success Washington, D. C., Feb. 17.— In an address yesterday before the Ameri can Society of Newspaper Editors, President Coolidge, stressed the im portance of the Americah newspaper and warning against its being used as medium for propaganda. He de clared that a public press unhampered is a true instrument under a republic for true representation and sound and logical interpretation of the truth; that the public press under an autoc racy is necessarily a true agency of propaganda; but under a free gov ernment it must be the very reverse. Propaganda seeks to prevent a part of the facts, to distort their relations, and to force conclusions which could not be drawn from a complete and candid survey of all the facts. He contended that the difficulty in com bating unfair propaganda, or even in recognizing it, arises from the fact that at the present time we confront so many new and technical problems t hat it is an enormous task to keep ourselves accurately informed con cerning them, since in our increasing dependence on specialized authority, we tend to become easier victims for the propagandists and need to culti vate sedulously the habit of the open mind. Of education and of real in formation, we cannot get too much, but of propaganda, which is tainted or perverted information, we cannot have too little. He called for the proper presentation of the news with out bias and without prejudice, and believed that the daily papers in this country print more real news and more reliable and characteristic news than those of other countries. THE PIONEERS OF AMERICA Anglo - Saxon World Builders Sustaining American Ideals and Standards “If American ideals and institu tions are to be preserved in this Na tion, we must inspire our youth with a vital knowledge of the ideals and aims upon which America’s founders builded this Nation,” said Theodore Roosevelt. President Coolidge added that “A training for good citizenship in America must include a knowledge of the heroic founders of America.” Nearly half a century ago James Russell Lowell wrote “America will endure only so long as the ideals and institutions that were given to us by our founders are maintained among our people.” Due to the great era of commer cialism through which America has been passing, and the tremendous wave of alien immigration that has swept the country, bringing hundreds of thousands of foreigners who knew practically nothing of the ideals and institutions of America, and even less of the founders of the Nation, the United States has been rapidly drift ing further and further away from the original intentions of the pa triots who founded America. A sudden realization of the ulti mate destination toward which the United States was drifting, if the present course were maintained, has; brought about the initiation of a Na tion-wide crusade for a return to the Constitution, and a re-awakening of the, national conscience to the early aims and principles laid down by the founders of this Republic. For an immediate check to the ruinous course the work has been started among the adults, but for a permanent realign ment of national citizenship among original lines, the wisdom of Theo dore Roosevelt’s words has been rec ognized, and a serious effort is now being made to “inspire our youth and (Continued on page 5) BISHOP PROCLAIMS MARRIAGE IN PROTESTANT CHURCH SCANDAL Wedding of Catholic Girl by Minister of Protes tant Faith Denounced Throughout Ireland By Bishop of Cork as Scandalous and Inavlid In Church I - 11 any Americans are still in doubt as to the Roman Catholic attitude to ward marriage ceremonies whenever performed outside the Roman Catho lic Church, the proclamation of the Roman Bishop of Cork, Ireland, ought to be as illuminating as interesting. The following is taken from the Weekly Telegraph, of Belfast: “At St. Fimbarr’s Church, South Parish Church, Cork, on Sunday last, the following announcement was read by order of Most Reverend Dr. Co halan, Roman Catholic Bishop of Cork. It is my unpleasant duty to refer to and condemn publicly a pub lic scandal which has occurred in this parish. I refer to the marriage of a Catholic girl in a Protestant church. Here, ignorance of church law can not be pleaded as an excuse. Chil dren in schools know that such a mar riage is null and void in the eyes of the church, and that it is a most seri ous offense for a Catholic to present himself or herself for the ministra tions of a Protestant minister offi ciating as a minister of a Protestant church. Marriage is a contract and a sacrament or a contract sacrament. The contract is a sacrament. Now, certain conditions can be prescried, for the validity of the ^ontract. The state prescribes the conditions that must be observed for the validity of civil contracts, a will for example, to be drawn up according to the condi tions defined by law. In the church, too, it can prescribe conditions for the validity of a sacrament contract. This is denied only by those who ac cept the theory of a church which has not power of authority. Invalid, if Outside Church “Marriage being a sacrament of the now law, the church has power to de fine the essential form ot' the eon trait. The' present law of the church is no marriage of Catholic or Catho lics is valid unless it he contracted, before the parish priest or bishop of the place where the marriage take place or before another priest by leave of the parish priest or bishop and at least two witnesses. State of Unlawfulness “I need not say that a Catholic living this life muss be excluded from, the sacraments. Then every Catho lic knows that it is a very grave of fense for a Catholic to present him self or herself for the ministrations. of a non-Catholic minister officiating* as the minister of a Protestant, church. There one must be true to one’s principles. When, as a Catho lic, one believes that the Catholic Church alone is the true church of Christ one must believe that all here tic schismatieal churches are in a state of unlawfulness. One cannot accept the ministrations of ministers of an unlawful church. One can never choose between the true ehurcii and the churches of heresy or schism, and by the law of the church a Catho de who gets married before a Protes .ant minister incurs the penalty of (Continued on page 4)
