A CAMPAIGN I'OH SPOILS.
The coming campaign in North
Carolina, so far as State matters are
concerned, promises to be a cam
paign for spoils, pure and simple.
It will be a regime of striving and
trafficing for office and the emolu
ments of office, and all fair ideals of
the people's weal, which have been
masqu reading in the tinsel of patrio
tism are being divested of disguise.
Fusion between the Populist and
Republican parties means just what
it did two years ago a compact to
acquire the public pelf and to divide
trie spoils among the foragers. The
Press-Visitor declared that this
would come to pass a good many
moons ago, but we were told that
the two parties could not combine
again. Populists said they could
not fuse again because they were
fighting for a principle and the Re
publicans would not subscribe to
that principle. The Republicans
said they could not fuse because
the conditions were entirely differ
ent and there was nothing in com
mon between the two parties. The
conditions have not changed so far
as the insatiate greed of the politi
cians for office is concerned, and
there is always something in com
mon between two parties whose
common mission is the acquirement
of plunder. We can well remember
when the Populists were crying
from the house tops for the estab
lishment of the sub-treasury sys
tem, and for government ownership
of railroads. In their zeal it would
have been supposed that the salva
tion of the entire human race de
pended upon the swift consumatiop
of these Utopian schemes, and we
were prepared at any time to see
these great reformers turn Heaven
and earth in their patriotic fervor
to administer their newly found
rostrums and panaceas to the im
mediate relief of the country from
its direful political hypochondria.
But what do we hear of the sub
treasury or of government owner
ship of railroads now? In their
stead the star of free silver has
blazed into the unpyrean and
eclipsed the entire constellation of
reform, and yet that, too, is about
to be dulled and lost with the deca
dence of the statesmen who have
come down to their true level and
are groveling for the sordid desid
eratum of political pap. How can
intelligent citizens look upon these
exhibitions and still have faith in
the sincerity of a party which has
declared itself to be fighting for a
principle above party and above all
things else? As we declared when
the campaign was first mooted the
Populists and Republicans deceive
1 t. nobody. They are out for pelf and
we suppose they will get it, but will
, not these glaring demonstrations of
their real objects, aims and pur-
" . , poses set the people to thinking?
,"--! ,Or 1 we their eyes already sufficiently.'

Don't All Speak al Once!
I have the following bargains:
20 shares N. B. Raleigh stock.
7 shares Farina Flour Mill stock.
5 shares Dime Savings Bank stock
1 house and lot on Halifax street.
2 Handsome residences on Hali
fax street.
1 handsome cottage on Oak wood
avenue.
2 houses and lots on South Blood
worth street.
1 house and lot near Bledsoe's
Grove.
1 house and lot on North street.
1 store and residence combined
(a decided bargain).
1 (3) room house and lot on South
street, price $250; rents for $52 per
year; has a good tenant who pays in
advance every week, which is 20
per cent profit. Call and get prices
and make me an offer. Those mark
ed thus I will sell on 100 months
time or for cash. Recollect if you
want to sell, McDonald is a hustler,
if you want to buy, McDonald is a
seller. Stop paying rent. 1 can
give you KKI mouths time to pay for
a home, and if you can t pay for it
this way, you will never have one.
It is an actual fact, I can sell you a
house and your monthly payments
will not be much more than your
present rent and in some instances
less, (live me a trial.
Don't You Forget It !
That the old Reliable Raleigh
Branch of the Southern is the best
place for the clerk, mechanic and
laborer to save some cf their
money. Better results are shown.
See what we have done. Facts!
When people have received all o
their money with a profit, call anil
let me show you who they are; they
will tell you. If you are going in to
save some of your hard earnings
and when vou are unfortunate, haxe
to come out, you don't only get your
hat back, but every red cent (and if
in long enough) a handsome profit.
If you make six monthly payments
you can withdraw and get every
cent of same. How is it with others?
Rise up, you suckers, who have been
nibbling at every new thing that
comes along, and tell the people how
you have been fooled and how much
less you got than you paid. Let
them have your experience and they
will profit by going in the lialeigh
Branch of the Southern, who has
been with you six years, and you
can't find a single honest person
who has any complaint, but instead,
praise actual fact. I have known
strangers to come along and sell
building ami loan stock to men
whom I trade with every day and
pay cash. Every cent I make is
spent in Raleigh. I can give you
names of people who cry "patronize
home industry and who order their
dry goods, clothingand other things
north, even white underwear, in
stead of giving their sewing to our
worthy poor people. I had a neigh
bor who wantud mv wife to order a
suit of clothes with her (as she could
get two for $1 99 each when one
would cost $2.) I refused, and said
I had rather buy here, as I make
my living here, even if I have to pay
a little more. How is it in financial
matters? Would you show good
sense in buying cotton mill stock in
Rhamkatte when the statement of
earnings showed they had spent
more than they had made, or in one
in Oberlin whose statement showed
handsome earnings. All I ask you
is to use the same common sense in
buying building and loan stock.
Don't buy ANY unless you know
some one who has tried it. Ik
well, as it will be too late when you
have been fed on promise and got
them. Show me a man who has ever
been in the lialeigh Branch of the
Southern, and if he is a sensible
man (most of the sensible ones are
''still in if and the others have
comeback.) Isn't it strange? it is
"'sbust as easy" to get them back
when they have had a tasie of its
profits, fair and square dealing,
wnerein otner associations you
could not pull them back with the
force of a mule. They know when
thev have had enough.
No Money In North Carolina.
Why is it that the Raleigh Branch
of the Southern does not lend money
in North Carolina? Simply for the
PROTECTION of her members who
have put confidence in her? How is
this? Well, the Supreme Court has
decided, more than once, that no
building and loan association, indi
vidual or corporation, can lend
money in North Carolina, EXCEPT
on straight 6 per cent. The South
ern has sense aswell as "cents" and
only loans her MEMBERS money in
those States where our contracts are
UPHELD. She has bids for her
money as fast as it comes in those
States. She would be SUICIDAL
to lend money HERE, where it
would take 15 YEARS to mature
stock (as it will all associations who
lend money in North Carolina at 6
per cent straight) whenuhe can lend
it elsewhere and mature her mem
ber's stock in less than 9 years (this
id the highest estimate.)
Don't you see, then, why any
sound building and loan can t-afford
to lend in North Carolina. If you
ean't I'm sorry for what little sense
Jon have, and the Southern will do
without your cents.' - : f?. , :
