J.Summerlin, who has been confined at his home on South Per son street, is improving. Mrs. F. L. Bunch and family and MissLoulaH. Briggs have return ed from a month's visit to Blowing Rock, N. C. v We regret to note that the little child of Mr. P. M. Davis is very ill with malarial fever at home on South Davie street. Mr. H. H. Cartland, of Greensboro, one of the best tailors in the State and his right hand man, Mr. Fowler, are in the city. Mr. Guion Dewey, who is now with the Seaboard Air Line at Nor folk, is in. the city and his many friends are glad to see him looking well. CITY IN BRIEF. Two convicts arrived at the peni tentiary today from Johnston county. It is said that Durham Democrats and Populists are on the point of fusing. A carp weighing 25 pounds was caught yesterday in the lake at the penitentiary. Peace Institute's term begins on - the 16th. Prof. Dinwiddie says he expects a large attendence. The regular meeting of the board and executive committee of St. Luke's Home will meet at that place Friday morning at 10:30. Evangelist Weston R. Gales is expected at Pitts boro next Satur day, and on Sunday will begin a series of religious services there. The "W. B.,"of St. Agnes Guild will meet at the home of Miss Hay, the secretary, at 6 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. A full attendance is re quested . The funeral of little Amy Ray place yesterday a. m. at the resi dence of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.W.Ray at 10 o'clock, conducted by Dr. Simms. Pall-bearers were Messrs. A. R. Love, George W. Cooper, S. M. Parish and L. H. Weathers. JLate yesterday afternoon there was a bad wreck of a freight train on the Southern railway between Selma and Wilson's Mills. The train broke, and the rear part telescoped the front section. As a result ten cars were smashed. Messrs. Jones & Powell will an nounce tomorrow that they are ready to supply their fall and winter trade for coal of all kinds. They handle the best coal there is in the market and at the very lowest prices. J Th report of the Raleigh Branch of the Southern Building and Loan Association is out and we cull the following, paid, "out since January 1, 1896, to July 1st, 1897, to members who got hard up and wanted their money, $455,876.52, of which $22,- 879,88 was , dividends on paid-up stock (if you will stop and think a moment you will see what a tremen dous amount of business this com pany, does, or association rather, as it is not a company, but an asso ciation of members who have 102, 253 shares now in force.) The com bined assets are $5,218,373.78. This association has paid out in dividends $192,130.28, their cash loans to mem bers is $2,284,926. Their home office building cost $50,000, and is one of the handsomest buildings in Enox ville, being of stone. This has proved to be a wise investment for the association. Cooler Weather. The storm has moved to the St. Lawrence Valley but was not ac companied by much rain, though it is raining on the west side this morning, namely at Marquette, De troit and Cleveland. Very heavy rains occurred at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Or leans reporting over 3 inches and Mobile and Port Eads over 2. A large high area and cool wave has appeared in the Northwest.
