very little ethyl butrate will scent

yellow, a dash of aniline was added.
The quantity was. so small that i
was called by thechemists "a trace."
The dye is one of the products of
the gas office, and is made by the
distillation of coal oil. The water
was charged, of course, with car

Americans at Piedras Negras,
Mex., are greatly excited over the
arrestof Conductor Jerry McCarthy,
whose train on the International
Railroad recently killed a Mexican
youth.
Ephraim Coleman and wife locked
their two little children into a house
at Waldo, Fla., while the parents
visited a neighbor, and the young
sters played with fire and were cremated.
Among the passengers who arriv
ed in Nomannia last week were the
famous troupe of Liliputians, the ten
Colbins, who set all Europe crazy
for many months by their wonder
ful performances. They come to
America under engagement to ap
pear at Hammerstein's Olympia
Musice Hall for a limited engage
ment, when thev will return to
Europe. None of the troupe is more
than 36 inches tall, while the smal
lest is only 28 inches high. All the
members speak several languages
and are well versed in music, play
ing the piano, violin, sleigh bells,
tubaphonc, chimes of sixty bells and
other diffiult instruments. The lit
tle people told many interesting
episodes of their lives, and bring
with them midget elephants and
ponies which have created a great
deal of excitement in Europe and
undoubtedly will do so in their
engagement at Oscar Hammerstein's
Olympia.
The movement in Germany for the
abolition of the crabbed Gothic let
ters to which German printers still
cling is making slow progress. A
correspondent of the Frankfurter
Zeitung recalls the fact that, this re
form has been demanded for a whole
century. A Munich newspuper in
1798 pointed out that there was noth
ing specifically national in the Gothic
letters, which were merely mediaeval
corruptions of Roman letters and
had gradually been allowed to fall
into disuse in all countries but Ger
many. However, this appeal for
conformity to the usages of the rest
of western Europe met with no re
sponse. Jacob Grimm, the great
philologist, lent all the weight of his
authority to a similar appeal some
fifty years later. But, save in books
of science, the old letters are still
almost universally employed, and
there are bigots who, like Prince
Bismarck, will not buy a book
printed" in Roman type.
An investigation of summer bev

sugar and ethyl burate. It was
mostly water and sugar, there being
as much of the latter as will stay in
