same process that has been used by
American pharmacists for the past
fifteen or twenty years lias recently
been described in Herman pharma -ceutieal
journals at great length and
hailed as a wonderful discovery, the
fact that the process has been so
long used here being totally ignored,
The Chicago Presbytery isdivided
upon the question of the saloon, says
a correspondent. One faction is in
favor of prohibition, while another,
and the dominant faction, won't go
on record as favoring that idea. A
resolution was offered committing
the presbytery to the policy of pro
hibition, and it was talked down anil
defeated. The basis of the argu- (
ments against the resolution was
that it is impossible to run Chicago
without the revenue derived from
the saloons The real cause of the
defeat was that the resoluti, n was
"taken to mean that the church was
getting into po'.iticts by indorsing
the tenets of the prohibition party.
Americans who are going abroad
this season will rejoice to know that
the American system of cheeking
the baggage of travelers has been
adopted for the benelit of American
tourists by several Kuropeati rail
road compani. s. Hereafter all bug
gage passing through London or
Paris from any point in the f'nited
States may be checked through to
almost any point in Kurnpe. The
traveler who was formerly annoyed
by being compelled to pick his t r unks
out of a pile of baggage, and then fee
a porter to rescue them f"T him. may
now forget that lie has trunks and
rind tbem at his hotel. The London
and North western Railroad was the
lirst to make the change, and other
railways have followed the example. I
The overland telegraph line which
connects England with her great
Indian empire passes through Per
sia, and has recently been subjected
to an interruption of a quite serious
character, due to the fanaticism of
the populace. It seems that there
has been a terrible drought, which
the subjects of the shah, instead of
attributing to providence, ascribed,
on the contrary, to the telegraph
poles, and, above all, to the posts
and signs of the survey department
of the company. Accordingly all
the obnoxious poles, wires and sur
vey signs were destroyed by a
priest-led mob. Strangely enough,
heavy rain fell immediately after
ward; and now, in spite of the se
vere punishment inflicted by the
Teheran government upon the ring
leaders, the masses of the popula
tion through Persia are firmly con
vinced that telegraph and survey
posts are productive of drought and
inventions of the devil.
