Washington Not. Washington, May 3,l897. The democratic members of the senate finance committee very pro perly declined to agree to the propo sition to allow the amended tariff bill to be reported to the senate as soon as the republicans have finished work upon it, which they say witf be this week. The democratic mem bers of the commfttee 'do dot expect to be able to get trie bin c banged in ' committee, nor do they desire 'to urn necessarily delay either its repoH to the senate or its reaching a. final vote, "but they insist upon taking time enough to go over the bill, which has been so extensively changed that it is practically a new one, in order to acquaintthemse'ves sufficiently with it to inform their colleagues -in the senate, and the country, why they oppose it, before it is reported to the senate. Toshow that the demand is not made for delay, the democrats of the commit tee have employed two outside tariff experts to assist them in going over the bill . It is believed that the action of Pension Commissioner Kvans, in calling for the resignation of every Democratic chief of division in the pension bureau, to take effect May 1st, indicates what will be done in all the other departments with the chiefs and other high salaried posi tions. The democratic employoes of the treasury department who are not so unsophisticated as to expect to be protected by the civil service com mission are preparing to "get it in the neck." A committee has been appointed to investigate all the bu reaus of the treasury department and to report a plan of reorganiza tion that will enable the most effi cient employees to get the largest salaries. That sounds all right, doesn't it? But every wide awake democrat knows that the plan re ported will give the biggest salaries to the republicans, and is preparing to take his dose of reduction with as trfrA firann aa lin nan if Yn Icn'f Sn n position to show his disgust by re signing when the reorganization is made.
