CROP CONDITIONS.
Cool Weather Damaging, but Rains Did
, Mush Good.
The Crop Bulletin, Issued this
morning says:
. The past week has been unfavor
able, being too cool throughout
North Carolina, considerably check
ing growth of crops. The weather
was also dry until the end of the
week, excepting light rain with
some hail in the northern portion on
the 27th. The warm rains of Sat
urday and Sunday were general and
will be of immense benefit. Farm
work has been well kept up. Cot
ton and corn continue small; some
cotton has died out from cool nights,
and the stand of corn is poor. To
bacco is growing off slowly. Wheat
has about headed and is beginning
to turn. Blackberries are abundant.
Crops are in excellent condition to
be benefited by suitable seasons, and
next week's reports will probably
indicate great improvement.
Central District. A hail storm
the night of the 23rd did some dam
age in the northern counties. The
week has been unfavorable for the
growth of crops; much too cool,
especially at night, and too dry.
Crops are, however, generally clean
and well worked and in the right
condition to be grealty benefited by
warm showers, which occurred the
last of the week. Cotton is not do
ing well; lice have appeared in one
or to counties. Corn all planted;
it is backward and stand poor; con
tinues to be damaged by worms.
Tobacco mostly transplanted; first
planting grew very well for a while,
but late plantings poor in growth;
leaves are narrow and p'.ants too
much inclined to go to seed, making
them worthless. Much of the tobac
co crop, however, is reported to be
doing well. Irish potatoes are line.
Wheat beginning to turn.
