TELEPHONE No. 168
TUESDAY June29
The officers of the Brooklyn navy
yard are somewhat annoyed at the
fact that a large number of deser
tions from the marine barracks have
taken place of late. The annoyance
is somewhat accentuated by the fact
that those who have remained faith
full to their trust have declared that
the cause of the desertions is due to
the bad food served out to the men.
Tre governor of Kansas has ap
pointed two women to the office of
notary public. But in Kentucky
not only is a woman filling that office,
but she is a woman of color.
Mary Ellen Brown, after a number
of years as a successful teacher, has
received the appointment of notary
public, and has qualified for its
duties. Her work is likelv to be
chiefly among her people who are
applying for pensions.
At Lexington, Ky., a lew days
ago, Will McAndrews and Tom
Murphy, newsboys, about 14 years
old, stole two bicycles. AlthoJgh
the offense is a felony, Police Justice
Gray Falconer dismissed the priso
ners on the promise of theirmothers
to give them a sound thrashing.
After court adjourned the boys were
taken to a cell, where, under the
direction of Chief of Police Jesse,
they were severely whipped.
It is found, as a result of some
interesting experiments recently
carried out by the German war office,
that for an ordinary man a weight
not exceeding forty-eight pounds
could be carried for twenty-five
miles, if the temperature does not
exceed 60 degrees, without any in
jurious effects, even when continued
for a number of days. If, however,
thetemperatureislOdegrees higher,
he same load has a temporary effect
ihe organisms. A weight of
sixty pounds is the maximum weight
which an ordinary soldier could
carry twenty five miles a day on
several consecutive days.
The eminent pianist, Chevalier
Guiseppe Ferrata, who holds the
first prize of the Royal Academy of
Rome, and special prizes of the
Italian government,and who isalso a
favorite pupil of the famous Lizst,
has, after a number of pressing in
vitations, come to New Orleans.
Chevalier Ferrata has been lately
appointed president of the Nash
ville Conservatory of Music, Nash
ville, Tenn. He will remain here
about three weeks as the guest of
hfs brother-in-law, Mr. L. D. La
garde, No. 833 Espianade aveojie,
after which time he goes east to fill
professional engagements.
It is not generally yet appreciated
, that there is a new Apollo in the
Senate for the somewhat non sequi
tur reasons that he had the front of
Jots nd the bair of Hyperon, says
the Washington Times. Mr. Conk
ling had a run on the Adonis busi
; ness, although Adonis never had
white hair and died in his 'teens.
The present senator jWbo can lay
claim to the classical inheritance
of the Senate, is Mr. McLaurin, of
South Carolina. During his cam-
v' i- , -
paigns in the State the opposition
papers used to speak of him as
"Curley-headed Jonnie." Every
body who knew the handsome, bril
liant young South Carolinian, how
ever, knows that it is not bis hand

Some question having been raised
about the ages of the clerks and
other employes in the department at
Washington, the correspondent of
the Chicago Record gives some in
teresting figures on that subject, as
follows: Number of employes under
25 years of age, 1802; between 25
and 30, 2578; between 30 and 35,
2345; between 35 and 40, 2033; be
tween 40 and 45, 1760; between 50
and 55, 1972; between 55 60, 1268;
between 60 and 65, 742. Only six
persons have been in the . public
service forty years. The figures
do not indicate, as is often given
out, that the dapartmentsare crowd
ed with old men who can do no work.
