The annoyance is somewhat accentuated by the fact that those who have remained faith full to their trust have declared that the cause of the desertions is due to the bad food served out to the men. Tre governor of Kansas has ap pointed two women to the office of notary public. But in Kentucky not only is a woman filling that office, but she is a woman of color. Mary Ellen Brown, after a number of years as a successful teacher, has received the appointment of notary public, and has qualified for its duties. Her work is likelv to be chiefly among her people who are applying for pensions. At Lexington, Ky., a lew days ago, Will McAndrews and Tom Murphy, newsboys, about 14 years old, stole two bicycles. AlthoJgh the offense is a felony, Police Justice Gray Falconer dismissed the priso ners on the promise of theirmothers to give them a sound thrashing. After court adjourned the boys were taken to a cell, where, under the direction of Chief of Police Jesse, they were severely whipped. It is found, as a result of some interesting experiments recently carried out by the German war office, that for an ordinary man a weight not exceeding forty-eight pounds could be carried for twenty-five miles, if the temperature does not exceed 60 degrees, without any in jurious effects, even when continued for a number of days. If, however, thetemperatureislOdegrees higher, he same load has a temporary effect ihe organisms. A weight of sixty pounds is the maximum weight which an ordinary soldier could carry twenty five miles a day on several consecutive days. The eminent pianist, Chevalier Guiseppe Ferrata, who holds the first prize of the Royal Academy of Rome, and special prizes of the Italian government,and who isalso a favorite pupil of the famous Lizst, has, after a number of pressing in vitations, come to New Orleans. Chevalier Ferrata has been lately appointed president of the Nash ville Conservatory of Music, Nash ville, Tenn. He will remain here about three weeks as the guest of hfs brother-in-law, Mr. L. D. La garde, No. 833 Espianade aveojie, after which time he goes east to fill professional engagements. It is not generally yet appreciated , that there is a new Apollo in the Senate for the somewhat non sequi tur reasons that he had the front of Jots nd the bair of Hyperon, says the Washington Times. Mr. Conk ling had a run on the Adonis busi ; ness, although Adonis never had white hair and died in his 'teens. The present senator jWbo can lay claim to the classical inheritance of the Senate, is Mr. McLaurin, of South Carolina. Every body who knew the handsome, bril liant young South Carolinian, how ever, knows that it is not bis hand that is curled Some question having been raised about the ages of the clerks and other employes in the department at Washington, the correspondent of the Chicago Record gives some in teresting figures on that subject, as follows: Number of employes under 25 years of age, 1802; between 25 and 30, 2578; between 30 and 35, 2345; between 35 and 40, 2033; be tween 40 and 45, 1760; between 50 and 55, 1972; between 55 60, 1268; between 60 and 65, 742. Only six persons have been in the . public service forty years. The figures do not indicate, as is often given out, that the dapartmentsare crowd ed with old men who can do no work.
