THURSDAY ...February 10 OI R TRADE FALLING OFF, In ten years the Uuited States, which occupied the second place among nations in foreign trade, meaning imports and exports com bined, has fallen off to third platv, and Germany has passed her in the race for supremacy now held bv England. United States Consul Covert, at Lyons, gives the figures in a report he makes to the State Department, devoted to quotations from an ad dress delivered at Lyons by M Jules Roche, former minister of finance and commerce. During that period of ten years the commerce of Eng land augmented 32 per cent , that if Germany 46 per cent., and the Uni ted States 14 per cent .while France fell off 3 per cent. Washington Post. In New York on Sunday Rev Or Crowe of the church of Eternal Hope, criticised Mr Moody's preach ing, saying that the evangelist was sincere, but blinded by superstition. According to Mrs Joseph Kings berry, a prominent society woman . of Atlanta, Ga., an epidemic is rag-. X ... ing in that city. It is not yellow fever, or worse yet yellow journal ism, but she considers it serious enough to justify a special warning on the subject. The epidemic is an epidemic of kissing, and demands, Mrs Kingsberry thinks, stern re pressive measures, such as the ad monitory toe of the paternal boot. Most of the blame she seems ins clined to place upon flirtations and impudent young men. Japan now threatens an invasion of the Klondike, it appears. A standing armv of 5,000 able-bodied laborers is being got together for the gold-fields, it is reported, and ill a month or so will make a descent upon Dawson City. "One of the Nippon Yuron Kaisha steamers will carry them," the report continues, "and as they will not land on the soil of the United States, there will be none to say them nay, unless Great Britain takes a band in the matter." It is added that the Japa nese will be taken over by a syndi cate, and chat trouble in the Klon dike, as a result of the Japanese in vasion, is predicted. Dr Hermann V Hilprecht, of the University of Pennsylvania, has just returned from the site of the ancient city of Nippur, in Babylonia where his archaelogical labors have been so successful. While in Con stantinople he visited the Suit n, who gave him many valuable anti quities. He also invested him with the Omaoli decoration. The Sultan, indeed, is so well disposed to Prof Hilprecht and his work of exjeavats Ing the ruin of ancient Babylon mat toe university leeisencouragea to continue i the researches on an even greater soale.
