PORTRAIT OF NKY.
Dr. Weston Discovers New Evidence i"
Rear Out His Theory.
Iter. Dr. James H. Weston, now rec
fv of the Episcopal church at Wilkes
boro, writes Col. Olds an interesting
letter. In it Dr. Weston says: "The
librarian of Da vidson lhge has l e
cently found a book in the colego li
brary, entitled 'Life of Napoleon Jiona
parte' I forget the name of the author
in which is a portrait of Marshal Ney.
Peter S. Ney read this book in 1S41. a
few months before his death, and under
the portrait of Ney he wrote In French:
'This Is not a. c. irreel likeness
of Marshal Ney.' He then, in a pencil,
drew on the same page, a sketch of
Marshal Ney, with these words under
neath: 'Ney. Hy himself. II fut chauve.
t Me was beheaded). This picture in the
bonk represents Ney as having; a full
head of hair, while it is not true, as
Marshal Neys memoirs state that he
was bald-headed, or nearly bald. Th
sketch id' Marshal Ney which P. S. No;
drew is an accurate likeness of Marshal
Ney, and also ery good one of lvier S.
Ney. This Tmd. I think, is of gre.it
importance. It is certainly very strong
additional proof of the truth of my (he
ory that P. S. Ney was Marshal Ney.
It seems to me to clinch (he argument.
This sketch of Marshal Ney. as made
by P. S. Ney, together with some val
uable notes written by the hitter, will
appear in a few days In the Historical
Magazine of Davidson College, a nd a
review of my book (in collect ion with
l his discovery ) w rit ten by mm oj' the
profesors of the college, will accompa
nv the publication."

FORGER LEWIS CALUOHT.
The Crook Who Adopted Gov. 8cala'
Name Caught at Madison.
Wentworth, N. C, Feb. 24. The al
leged "crook," Robert P. Lewis, who
lias been "operating" under the name
of the late Gov. A. M. Scales, of Greens
boro, land State Senator Scales, of the
same name), was arrested at Madison
and is now safely lodged In the county
jail at this place to await the coming;
of the Texan sheriff who wants him
for alleged forgery In that State.
It is thought now that Lewis has
been around here among his kin folks
for some time, probably ever since he
left Keysville.
The sheriff from Paris. Texas. Is al
ready on his way to North Carolina
afler Lewis.
It is thought t tint Lewis stayed In
the woods last night and had gone In
to got his breakfast Just when the of
licers t ame up on him and had levelled
on him willi their guns before he saw
them.
Lewis is wanted In Texas for forgery
anil Jumped his ball bond, and the
present arrest Is at the Instnnee of his
bondsman who has had to suffer on his
account.
Lewis under the name of Scales, held
a high position in religious and business
life in Kevsville. nnd had fully won the -
respect and regard of that community.
so much so that detectives charge that
eiti7.etis of the town aided Lewis, who
was known there under his alias of A.
M. St ales, to make his escape.
His friends there made a strong ef
fort to keep the Incident Quiet, and
even the newspaper correspondents'
were Induced to refrain from sending
out the news about the fleeing man and
the nnlv comprehensive reports con
cerning the remarkable story of Lewis
came from other sources.
He is known In Marlon and Buchan
an county, Va.. and in neither place
has he the good reputation he succeed
ed In establishing at Keysville, where
though a fugitive from Justice wun
the officers on his track, he had so
impressed the people with his character
that they did not believe him guilty.
Levis' friends still maintain that ft
he stands trial in Texas he will be
cleared.
