Ills utterances were cheered to the echo. THE RESOLUTION ADOPTED. The resolutions recite that, the asso ciation was chartered February 12, ism;, the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, and was organized at Fredericksburg, Feb ruary 22, 1898, the birthday of Wash ington. Its purpose is stated to be the preservation of the battle-fields before mentioned, and their dedication as a national memorial park. Authority was lodged In the hands of an executive committee to take all pr. pc v place before Congress the Importance and desirability of this great work, and to urge on Congress the need of prompt I action. I Thar further reelte that the aaaoeia- J tion made up of Incorporators from thirty-eight States and the District of Columbia will Join heartily In the under taking, and that the executive commit tee is directed to bring the matter to the attention of the Governors and Leg islatures of every State In the Union which had soldiers in these sanguinary battles, and to urge upon them the Im portance of marking, by appropriate memorials, the places occupied by their respective troops. Loud calls were made for Gen. Long- street, the grizzled old hero of the most street, the grizzled old hero of the lost cause, who sat in the audience with his devoted and pretty young wife. The vet eran hobbled slowly to the front, and in a few graceful words expressed his pleasure at the warmth of the greeting extended him. Follow ing this came an adjournment to the Exchange Hotel, where a mag nificent banquet had been prepared. The feast of oratory had evidently put the assemblage In fine trim for the ma terial feast. The choicest vianas ot tne Old Dominion were set before the asso ciation and its guests, and full Justice was done the finest spread that has been seen in Fredericksburg in many a day. "Our Gallant I lead," w as responded to by Gen. Edgar Alien. Tin- President of the United Stales found a splendid defender in the person of Col. H. I. Norton, of Massa chusetts. Gen. W. W. Brown told of he valorous d-eds of the Army of the Potomac, and G-n. H. V. l'.oynton did ih- same for th- Army of Northern Virginia. Representative Lamb, of Hi. Iimoiid. spoke for "The Congres." and Gen. IV G. Pates, of Connecticut, -spond-d to "Gen. Sedgwick."
