Deathless Hope. MRS. B. L. HOWELL "Sweet Hope is dead,n I moaned, "And I have buried her beyond my sight, Henceforth the brightest day, To me, is as the gloom of darkest night," Yet even when I wept A rift broke through the gloomy, clouded sHies, And Hope's glad face looked down upon my own With tender, loving eye?. "My flower of Hope is gone! The rude winds tore it from my teuder bold; In vain, with anxions eves. I searched my garden and the dis tant world." This morning while I walked In pensive thought adown an hum ble street I found my blossom in a true, true Heart, All dewy-fresh and sweet. "My gem of Hope is lost! I saw it sink beneath the billow's crest; The pearl of my heart Shall shine no more upon my happy , breast." Last night within my room I found a casket hidden long ago I raised the lid, and lo! with luster bright. My jewel, all aglow! Hope dead or lost? Ah, no! She doth but vail her radiant face and form, As suits God's perfect will; And though our souls seem dead to every joy, Some faint hope liveth still. We may sit down in deep and dumb despair. Nor care to lift our eyes, Unmindful though the voice of friendship pleads And suffering Duty cries; Yet somewhere, sometime, stealing through our hearts So sad with grief and fear A shy sweet Presence thrills us with her smile And whispers: Hope is here" THE OLD NORTH STATE.
