Correspondence Evkkixg Visitor. Something has bten said at various times in the city papers about early closing, but nothing definite has been done yet. It is a matter of regret that there should be so little public spirited generosity among our busi ness men as to produce such persist ent silence on this important subject. It is the narrow minded selfishness of a few men that blocks the way of this much needed reform in the busi ness habits of Raleigh; and those mercantile establishments with broad er views and more generous impulses should rise above this spirit and take the initiative along this line. There is really no necessity for the stores of the city to be kept open be yond, say six or seven o'clock in the evening except possibly Saturday evenings. Justice to the clerks and bookkeepers require that this early closing be adopted. But says one, I have no clerk, or bookkeeper, and therefore have nothing to do with this question, but my friend you have; for you know, if you keep open, your neighbor who has two clerks will be afraid that you may sell a spool of cotton that he might nave sold and make a half a cent on it; and therefore he will not close. Thus many scores of clerks and employees are kept confined the year round v with no time for self improvement and recreation, but driven on in the dull round of a monotonous sort of tread mill existences, with nothing to inspire nobl r ambitions and higher aims. The clerks and employees have as much right to consideration in the business arrangements of a commu nity as any other like member in that community. A great deal can be said about the selfishness, or wart of consideration on the part of the cus tomers in doing their shopping at such hours as to furnish the merch ants an excuse to keep open late. If all the people would determine not to buy after 6 pm, all the stores would be closed and Raleigh would enjoy much more of the social. Mr Editor agitate. 1 want to eay more but your space forbids. W. The American Bird. On Saturday a bald eagle attacked a dog on the farm on which Mr Wal lace Fields lives, near Derwood, Md, and took from it a piece of fresh beef. ' Mr Fields' attention was called to his dog, which was about one hundred yards from the dwelling, by its pite ous howlings, and advanced in that direction. Running toward the house was the dog with the piece of beef in his mouth and the eagle apparently riding o.thdog's back and billing ihis head, until the blood was profuse li' yftfo$inj?' The dog dropped the meat and the eagle seized it, skimming the earth in Itf flight. The rog turned on the . eagle again with another dog that had!ome to his assistance, and re- .iit'-i ii mi i j ed the dogs the second time, and se cored the meat, taking flight alight ing in a large tree on the premises. Mr Fields had loaned his gun out, . and, before his return irom e neign- bor's with a gm to shoot the eagle, it bad taken its fltaal departure and ' has not been seen since. Professor Rector has lost his bride. He was recently married to the daughter of Ben Ward, a prominent citizen, after a very short acquaintance, and they started on a brief tour. At Hope, forty miles away, the professor thought of some neglected business at Texarkana, and, leaving his wife at Hope, went to transact it. There he got drunk aud spent his last cent. The girl returned home. When the professor got sober enough he wrote a note to his spouse as follows: 1 "My Dearest, Darling Duckie: Please, where are my clothes?"1 The answer came back: "Your clothes are where you left thein, and I am wherd you found me. You may succeed in recovering your duds, but you can't get me any more. I intend o stick to dad." Puzzled Cigarette Dealers. Hereafter sellers of cigarettes in Maryland must pay an extra license of $50 yearly and make oath that the cigarettes which they sell contain no 'injurious drugs." Their situation is not a pleasant one, for it is impos sible for them to know what a cigar ette contains, and the phrase "inju rious drugs" is capable of very varied interpretation. For that matter to bacco is classed by many as an "in' jurious drug," and there is ample ex pert evidence to sustain their posi tion. But this is a minor point. Boston Post. The Firemen's Tournament. Charlotte Chronicle. J N McCausland, the secretary of the firemen's committee for the 20th of May Celebration, is moving ahead with the work entrusted to him. Al ready two companies, besides the Pioneer, of this city, the Capital Hose Company, of Raleigh, and the Acme Steam Fire Company of Monroe, have entered for the contests m the Firemen's Tournament. A number of companies besides these are corres ponding with Mr McCausland, and a large number of companies will soon be entered for the contest. In the meantime any companies who have not yet written to Mr McCausland and intend coming to Charlotte's great celebration, should write to him immediately. A postal card was recently deliver ed in England fifteen years after it had been posted, having been found at the bottom of a letter box, where it had doubtless lain unnoticed ever since it was first dropped.
