The Census Taker Mast Know More Than Your Age. He will be abroad in the land in two weeks looking for cork legs and false teeth.and past records and mort gages on your house, and lots of other things. When the five enumerators begin their work next Monday week, there will be music in Raleigh households, the echoes thereof in all probability reaching to the courts. The twenty six questions which are to be answered concerning each in habitant of this city are calculated to cause rebellion, even among those for whom previous censuses had no terrors. Here is the list of queries: Christian name in full and initi il of middle name. Surname. Whether a soldier, or marine dur ing the civil war (United States or Confederate), or widow of such per son. Relationship to head of family. Whether white, black, mulatto, quadroon; octoroon, Chinese or Japa nese or Indian. Sex. Age at nearest birthday. If under one year, give age in months. Whether single, married, widowed or divorced. Whether married during the cen sus year (June 1st, 1889, to May 31st, 1890). Mother of how many children and number of these children living. Place of birth. Place of birth of father and mother. Number of years in the United States. Whether naturalized. Whether naturalization papers have been taken out. Profession, trade or occupation. Months unemployed during the census year. Attendance at school during the census year. Able to read and write. Able to speak English. If not, the language or dialect spoken. Whether suffering from acute or chronic disease, with name of disease and length of time afflicted. Whether defected in mind, sight, hearing or speech, or whether crip pled, maimed or deformed, with name of defect. Whether a prisoner, convict, home less child or pauper. r Is the house you live in hired, or is it owned by the head or a member of the family. If owned by the head or a member of family.is the house free from mort gage encumbrance? If the house is owned by head or member of family, and mortgaged, what is the post office address of the owner? The last six questions have been 1 added to the usual list by Superin tendent Robert P Porter, and are ex pected to cause trouble. A refusal to answer may mean arrest and $100 fine. 'There1 will, no doubt,' be many an ' argument before unmarried women of a certain age will conf ess to defects : .', in hearing, and ngar sighted people will want to be set down as having '.'defective eyesight." The census takers of Ra'eigh, will earn about $85 a week while they work, not to speak ' of the fun they will have; ' t One section of the law in regard to their wot 1; provides that "in ease no person shall be found competent to answer the inquiries, then It shall be lawf nl for the enumerator to obtain the required information as nearly as practicable, from the family or faml- J lies or person or persons, living near- j estto such place of abode." llils may lead to trouble in the neighbor hood when unpleasant questions about mortgages, and diseases, and defects and past records are not an swered by the victim and the census taker goes "next" for his replies. The enumerators for this city will be made public in a few days. THE OLD NORTH STATE. Warrenton Gazette: The wheat is sorry. The cotton is coming up well. Goldsboro Dispatch: Goldsboro is to have a tannery of gigantic propor tions. New Berne Journal: All through East Carolina the crop prospects are said to be very fine. Stanley Observer: The stand of corn and cotton is generally conceded to be good. Oxford Day: The Oxford Land, Im provement and Manufacturing Com pany's negotiations for the removal of several large Northern manufac turing enterprises to their property, are progressing satisfactorily, and it is likely that important announce ments in this connection will be made within a week. Washington Gazette: The well at the canning factory has reached a depth of 165 feet, where solid rock has been reached, necessitating the use of different tools The well has passed through a stratum of shell, and some very singular specimens have been brought to the surface. We no ticed one, a small couch, smooth as glass, with peculiar thread like lines, cut on the inside. La GrangeSentinel: The potato bugs doing great damage to the po tato tops. In less than an hour after the books were opened eighty nine shares of the cotton factory were taken, and up to the time of going to press 125 shares have been taken. Asheville Democrat: Mr B E Ham lin, of Scranton, Pa, was in the city last week, having been to Macon county looking after some valuable timber and mineral properties with a view of investing. Messrs Cummings and Buffin, two prominent Northern capi talists, hav ing visited Western Carolina, inspect ed the inexhaustible timber supplies of the section, and satisfied them selves that the field was a most invit ing one, purchased a site near Dills boro and are busily erecting a timbiV plant to cost at least $59,000. An Heir of A. T. Stewart. New York World. Charleston, W Va, May 17. Jas Carr, father of President Robert E SCarr, of the West Virginia State Senate, is taking steps to begin suit as one of the heirs to the A T Stew art estate. Mr Carr was born in Bellenhinch parish, Ireland, about 'seven miles from the residence of "Uncle Jack," A T Stewart's father, and his grand' mother was a niece of A T Stewart. At present three of her daughters are living, all of whom are residents of this country, while a brother. James Scott, died about three years ago. Mr Carr says he has known of the relationship all bis life, but never oc curred to him until recently that he had a legal claim against the Stewart estate He has employed able counsel, who pronounce his claim good, and who will take steps to push it at once. This may affect Judge Hilton's grip upon ' the estate to a considerable extent. Love cannot be hid any more than light and. least of all when It shines forth In action, when ye exercise your selves in the labor of love, in bene ficence of every: kind. Spanish EtlquettJ In Spain, the etiquette 'to be ob served in the rojal palaces was car ried to such len.thto mak martyrs of their kings. At length, l de Potat appeared, and il e king or- dered him tt damp the Xres; but he excused himself, alleging that he was forbidden by the etiquette to perform such a function, for which the Duke d' Usseda ought to be called upon, as it was his business. The duke was gone out; the fire burnt fiercer; and the king endured it rather than dero gate from his dignity. But his blood was heated to such a de gree that an erysipelas of the head appeared the next day, which succeeded by a vio lent fever, carried him off in 1621, in the twenty fourth year of his age.
