A Mountain Trip. I Correspondence Evimsa Visitor Hendereonvllle, N C, ia beautiful for situation, and destined to become J one of the most famous resorts of this land, chiefly on account of its de lightful climate, pure water and the granduer of its scenery. It may well be called "the Switzerland of Amer ica," for even that country so fasci nating to the bold traveler cannot surpass this in magnificence It was on a Saturday morning, bright and early that a party,- including Dr. Lewis, the esteemed president of Jud son College, his always iheerful wife, their daughter and three suns, with the art teacher of Judson, and the Rev Mr Jones and wife, accompanied us in a trip up Mount Hebron. We thought it the longest four mile ascent we had ever taken, but though far too narrow, it is a good mountain road, while the constantly chauging scenery makes the trip a most de lightful one. Up on Mount Hebron, we are over 3,000 feet above the sea, and ascend ' ing an observatory we get some idea of the famous mountain ranges of ti.e South. The Blue Ridge stretches out for 100 miles before ou. The Balsam range 5,000 feet above th sea looms up in granduer before your eyes; and so does the smoky-range as it divides Tennessee from North Carolina. Mount Mitchell, 50 miles away, with its immense summit 6,003 feet above sea level, is clearly seen. You can also gaze upon rocks on Mt. Trjon, 25 miles away, and Mt. Pisgah also at tracts your attention. Here on the observatory, by the aid of a telescope, you cannot only see the pretty settle nient of an English colony, seme few miles away, but the church, the stores, the post office and those going in and out, and even the roses trailing up the neat parsonage. Looking out between the great mountain ranges, the valley views are as pretty as na ture in her loveliest mood could make them to charm and fascinate the be holder. Mr Hicks Jones takes great pleasure in describing the many places of in terest as you look upon them from his observatory, and when you leave there you feel as if you must stop at his neat and cosey farm house on the mountain side, and had you seen our party there about 2 o'clock taking possession of things generally, and of fried chickens, newly churned butter, and such milk as only cows that graze on rich mountain pasture can give, yon would certainly have concluded that there was nothing the matter with our appetites. His v ife also knows how to make things pleasant for the visitor, and if you wish for an enjoyable day, drop Mr Hicks Jones a letter and he will meet you at Hen dersonville and take you for atrip up Mount Hebron, and if the weather is favorable it will be an event in j our life. If you are looking for health, rest and a pleasant change, do not be too anxious to go to some reat distance, but turn your attention to Hender sonville and go there. J. J. Hall. Few census returns have yet been re ceived byMrPorter. Although the enu meration of the population of each of the large cities was in most cases prac tically completed last Saturday even ing, it is not expected that the work will be wholly finished in all of them till next Tuesday evening, when the fourteen working days which the law allows for this work will end. Up to this time returns have been received from a few districts in the cities of Washington, New York, Philadel phia, Pittsburg and Shreveport, La. Electric counting machines will be used in counting from the schedules, so that but little time will be neces sary in making computations after the schedules are received. It is ex pected that the population of Wash ington, and possibly that of a num ber of other cities, can be announced late in the present week. Pot of Money. There is no trick or catch of any kind about the pot of money to be given away, by Sample 8 Brown & Co. It is to be a fair and honest guessing match, gotten up to amuse the customers and advertise the busi ness of the popular One Price House. -Greensboro Patriot. North Carolina boyt art In the lead.
