According to the Hartford Courant, a company of large capital, and com posed of some of the wealthiest men of the place, has been formed in that city to market a method of convert ing heat directly into electricity. Electricians have in vain sought to do this, bat it is claimed a Maine boy H B Cox, has solved the problem, and his invention is in the hands of the Hartford capitalists. If the reports are true, the much predicted revolu tion in motive power seems to he at hand. ' It is claimed that from a sin gle gas jet electricity enough can be Obtained to run a sewing machine, and at an expense that will make Steam very costly in comparison. Economists have looked in this direc tion for such a cheapening. of motive nower as to decentralize capital to an extent that will solve the whole prob lem of capitalistic combination, and the State control of industry which miffht crow out of it.- The develop- . ments of this invention, if what It is alleged to be, will be watched witn world wide interest, The Morris lottery hill has passed to a third reading in the Louisiana poxiBe of Representatives, A Word, Wither. -Jpnea. Danville Register. ReySamP Jones passed through the city yesterday morning on his way from Richmond to Atlanta, and as he was delayed at the depot for an hour, was called upon by a number of bis friends. Mr Jones was in good trim and looked none the worse for his labors in Bicbmoml. 'Were you satisfied with the Rich mond meeting?" he was asked by a scribe who was present. "Well," r plied Mr Jones, "it was a good meeting, but I'm mighty hard to satisfy. I'm like the boy who couldn't get enough sugar, and finally his father put him down by a barrel f ul and told him to help himself. The boy ate and ate until he couldn't eat any more, and his father finally asked him if he had enough. The boy re plied: 'No, I haven't got enough, but I ve got down to where the sugar don't taste good." "We had a grand time last night," continued Mr Jones. "There were 12,000 people present and several of the brethren spoke out about the meeting. R H Whitlock, who is a splendidjfellow.arose and said: 'Broth er Jones, I endorse you, but I think you use too much cayenue pepper. I like all but the pepper.' I told him that a fellow who had raw spots on his hide couldn't stand cayenne pepper, and it was five minutes before the crowd quit laughing." "Have you got a message for Dan ville?" he was asked, as he started to the train. "Bless your soul, you tell the Dan ville people that they have got the grandest little city of its size in the country. I don't know another one like it, and you've got such a grand people here that it does me good even to pass through Danville on the train." "Yon're coming back next spring?" "O yes," he said; "that has all been arranged." Episode of the Hat. Philadelphia Press. A stately and handsome example of the well bred young lady attended a theatrical first night last week and occupied, with her escort, seats in the third row of the orchestra. She was so fair to look upon that a large share of the audience watched her as she went down the aisle and settled grace fully in a chair. It was then observed, with much interest, that she raised her arms and detached from her head the fashion able hat that became her so well. Her hair was bright golden, and under the lights it fairly flashed in its beauty. The old gentleman sitting be! Jnd her settled back comfortably in his chair and congratulated himself that he had been placed behind such a thoughtful creature.for now he could not only see the stage, but a splendid head of hair as well. Presently two or three young wo men in the immediate vicinity quiet ly removed their hats, having noted the admiration that the originator of the scheme had excited. From this the movement spread until hatless feminine heads were discoverable all over the theatre, even to the rear rows of the circle. Be tween the acts a paper began to cir culate among the people in the or chestra. Each gentleman, as he received it, read something that had been written on it, and then smilingly signed his name, after which he passed it to his immediate neighbor. In a few moments the paper came back to the old gentleman that had started it on its travels. Bending for rard, he politely addressed the gold en haired girl, handing to her at the same time the paper. She read it, and as she did so a deep blush and a smile crept over her face. The paper was a vote of thanks signed by thirty or more of the male spectators. Its text was as follows: "We, the undersigned, desire to ex press our respectful admiration for a most beautiful and considerate young moving her hat from her bright gold en head, hasset the fashion for oth ers, thereby rendering it possible for a delighted audience to witness the details Of a staze Derformance." ovWouW&i man-behind, and folding the paper, I was very happy. One of the most romantic weddings in high life ever celebrated in this State took place in Greenville yesterday. Two years and a half ago Guy Har ris, a youth or sixteen, the son of the merchant prince of the city of Spar tanburg, eloped with Miss Susie Wal ker, the very pretty fifteen year old daughter ot Colonel James Walker, ex-Mayor of the town and president of the principal bank. They were legally married by a notary public and the youthful groom immediately conducted his biide to his father's house and invited her parents to come over and participate in the wedding feast. Colonel Walker objected to the marriage on account of the youth of the contracting parties and took his daughter North, and when she re turned she again entered society as a popular young lady. Col Walker de clared the marriage illegal on account of the young people oeing under age but young Harris has considered him self legally married. I Yesterday morning, oust before day light, Miss Walker, accompanied by lady friends, left her Ifather's house, met Harris in an appotited place and arrived in Greenville Ian hour later.
