Chained For Life.
Jay Hill died a few days ago at hU
home, five miles above Trinity Col
lege, N. C, aged seenly years. He ;
was a most remarkable character. He j
was born an idiot, bat since infancy
has possessed physical strength to a
rare degree, and was well formed in
every particular with the exception
of his head, which was so extremely
illshaped as to give him more the ap
pearance of a beast than of a man.
When but a child he was often so vi
olent that it was necessary to chain
him to the floor. Notwithstanding
this unnatural existence, he grew and
strengthened day by day, until his
chair was not sufficient to hold him,
and two three times he broke loose
and fled to the woods
Dnrins-his brief liberty he was
as
violent as a tiger, an J it was difllcu
t
to recapture and return him to his
place of confinement. He was fast
ened with stronger bauds, and with
the exception of a few days, he re
mained chained to the floor in the
same room for about fifty years. He
had an insatiate desire for tearing to
pieces anything that he could get,
and at times it was impossible tc
keep him clothed. Flax was spun up
into coarse, strong threads and wo
ven into cloth, which was doubled
and quilted and made into garments
for him, but with his teeth and his
talon fingers he tore them into
threads. He has been known to tear
to pieces a solid stick of hickory
wood with nothing but his teeth and
fingers. He ate as ravenously as a
lion, and could drink, without the
slighted pain, boiling coffee.
On several occasions members of
the family narrowly escaped being
killed by him. One evening a sister
started to go out of doors. She pass
ed too near him and he sprang at her
with great force,knocked her through
the door into the yard, so badly inju
ring her that it was not thought pos
sible for her to live. His father pro
vided for him before his death, leav
ing property enough to maintain a
wretched life through all these years.
It was stipulated in the will that he
should not be taken to an asylum, and
that he should be kept on the old
homestead . Exchan ge.

Ice Cellar!
We have opened an ice cellar under
the Henry Building, opposite the
post office, where our Mr R H Mur
phey will be pleased to give every
one full value for their cash or tick
ets. This ice is made on large iron
plates, then cut into blocks, and has
no porous or soft parts. This process
insures
Absolute Purity,
wonderful transparency, great dens
ity and freedom from air bubbles. It
is more nearly like natural lake or
river ice than can be made by any
other process, but is more pure and
more durable, as demonstrated by
actual experimenis, with both under
the same conditions.
Our White Covered Wagons
go wherever wanted in town, both
morning and evening.
FULL WRIGHT GUARANTEED.
