A statement is going the rounds of
the pre-s that every sheriff elected in
Rowan county, during the past fifty
years, hap died in office. Perhaps
this will be the means of scaring some
of the candidates in that section off
of tho track. We do not know ,'now
it would operate in Wake, but rather
expect there are nany who would be
willing to take the risk.
The venerable Mr. Paul C. Came
ron stated in the recent meeting of
stockholders held at th- Mayor's of
fice, that he had never lost anything
by investing in cotton factories. This
ehould be encouraging coming from
such a good financial source, and
ehould inspire our capitalists with
confidence. Mr. Cameron is splendid
authority on such matters.

The Prize Riddle.
Sometimes iny face you like to see ;
Sometimes you have a fear of me ;
For changeful are the forms I wear,
And fateful are are the counts I bear
Erstwhile, as weapon of defense,
No warrior could with me dispense.
In later tiu.es, as tools I'm found,
To break t e rock, or loose the
ground.
Sometimes of metal I am made;
Sometimes of paper for the trade.
To wi) j.-eJ creatures I belong
I help to make the anchor strong.
You'll meet me here, you meet me
there,
In fact you'll meet me ev'rywhere.
The Union Mission.
It is earnestly desired that a meet
ing of the Board of Directors for this
Mission may be held on Monday at 5
p. m. The Superintendent, Mr. S. J.
Betts, having decided to leave the
city, has placed in the hands of the
Secretary his resignation as Superin
tendent. The work done by him has
been well and faithfully done, and
without compensation. Through
this agency, the poor have been con
sidered and nearly 250 pieces of cloth
ing have been given them, besides
13 barrels of flour and other minor
things. The average attendance up
on the meetings has been 40 per night
The average number of persons ex
pressing a desire to be saved from
their sins is 3 per night. The num
ber of converts have been ten, five of
whom connected themselves with the
church. Many members of the church
have been strengthened and encour
aged to go forward, and some are do
ing a good work in the community.
This Mission commends itself to the
good people of Raleigh, and it is
hoped that more will gi"e it substan
tial aid and support.
S. M. Parish,
Secretary.

Our Grapes.
Grapes are beiDg shipped in targe
quantities from the various vineyard
of this vicinity and it is a source of
much gratification to note, that the
fruit is equally as abundant and of as
good quality as heret ofore. We learn
that between five and six hundred
baskets have been shipped from Col.
Heck's vineyard during the past two
days, and, our friend Mr. Bilyew is
sending off the usual supply. The
cultivation of this most delicious
fruit is getting each year to be more
popular and remunerative, and those
who ought to know say, that after
the first three years the yield per
acre can be estimated at $100. This
is surely encouraging for those who
advocate diversified crops.
A Nice Drive
The drive from the city to Pullen
Park will soon be a most excellent
one. Under the able management or
Mr. W. C. McMackin, Hillsboro road
is beine put in splendid order. All
the gullies on each side are being fill
ed up, thus making the thoroughfare
much wider. The soil, however, is
red clay, and unless it be packed with
gravel, it can never be what may be
termed a clean road. We understand,
that, as soon as the leveling and grad
ing are completed, crushed stone will
be put down, so thi t the read from
the city limits to its intersection with
the A vent Ferry road will be as good
as most of the streets in town. We
would sugees', that, after the Hills
boro road is finished, the Avent Ferry
road from its intersection with the
main road to the entrance to the
park should receive a packing of
gravel. It is only ebout a qwter
of a mile from the Hillsboro road to
the Park, and as it now is, the Avent
Ferry Road is the only direct outlet
to the place. This road from its in
tersection with the Hillsboro road, to
the park, is red clay soil and the
least rain renders it almost impassa
ble.
We have no doubt that Suporinten
dent McMackin is taking in the whole
situation and that he will soon give
the people a road from th city to the
park in all respects creditable, pro
vided he is not interferred with on
the "penny wise and pound foolish"
idea.
