Dennis Hammond, a farmer in St. Clair county, Ala., has lived three days with neaily half his skull gone and one side of his brain exposed, and the attending phsicians think the man will recover and a tough skin grow over and protect the brain. Two years ago Hammond suffered a case of sunstroke, from which he never fully recovered. At times he would complain that his brains seem ed to be burning, and he Buffered great pain. A few days ago he had a severe at tack of his trouble. While at the supper table that night he suddenly sprang up saying: "My brain is burn ing up, my brain is on fire.'' He ran out of the house and into the woods, shrieking with pain. His family searched in vain for him that night, and the next day he came home with one side of his head ciushed and a portion of his skull gone. His brains could be plainly seen through the gaping wound. He was perfectly rational and explained that he broke his skull with a rock and poured water iu the opening to cool his burn ing brain. Dr. Ash, of Springville, was summoned. He removed the pieces of broken skull, sponged off the exposed brain and the patient soon fell into a natural sleep. He seems to be improving, and Dr. Ash thinks there is a chance for recovery. If Hammond recovers it will be the only case of the kind on record. Clever Paupers Caught. London Telegraph. Sympathetic spectators gathered this afternoon around a young man who fell down in front of the Louvre in what appeared to be an epileptic seizure. One of the bystanders stepp ed forward and proposed to carry the invalid to a chemist's shop not far off and another offered to aisist. The one who spoke first took up the epileptic's hat and, throwing six pence into it, said to the crowd: "I am a poor man myself, but if each one of you did as I do this unfortu nate creature would have something to help to relieve his sufferings." Im pelled by this generous example, the crowd showered coppers and small silver into the hat until over ten shillings was collected. Great was their astonishment when two con stables walked up and seized both the benevolent originator of the alms col lection and the epileptic sufferer. The latter, as soon as he opened his eyes and saw the policeman, forgot that he was an invalid and attempted to escape. They were both taken to the lock up and were identified as two well know lazy mendicants. named Carnet and Desmarests. They had enacted the same dodge success-. fully in the Rue Saint Honore during the forenoon, the epileptic and his colleague on that occasion fleecing the charitable to the extent of eight shillings. The chemist's assistant who relieved the Dretenderi suf ferer in the Rue Saint Honore, hap pened to pass the Louvre while his second performance was going on. Suspecting a fraud, he told the police, hence their arrest. Surgeon General John Moore, U. S. A., placed on the retired list bv oner- . w m K ation of law on account of age. f ' SPECIAL NOTICES.
