With push, energy, and a fair proportion of advertising, the outlook will be splendid. Horton, of Little Rive township, clerk in the office of sheriff J. This body assembled in Metropoli tan Hall today at 12 o'clock, for the purpose of nominating a ticket for Chief Justice and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Caro lina, and to ratify the nominations made in the several judicial districts for Judges of the Superior Courts. There was a fair attendance con sid -ring no excitement had been de veloped relative to the nominations The convention was called to order by E. Chambers Smith, chairman of the Democratic State Executive Com mittee, who made a most excellent and forcible speech. The convention was permanently organized by the selection of H. L. Gudger, Esq , of Buncombe.as chairnian.andjMessrs.S. A. Ashe and Josephus Daniels as sec retaries, with the reporters of the Democratic press as assistants. While the convention was waiting the report of the committee on organ ization, Gov. Jarvis was loudly called for and he responded in a very able and encouraging speech. Amon. other good things, he said that a large per cent of the people of our State who do the voting, and a large per cent of the people who do the work and make the wealth of our State Hud build up our cities, are de manding to be heard, and that it be hooved this convention and the peo ple of our State that they should in all our deliberations; not only shall tliey be heard, but fully eard. Dur ing his speech Gov. Jarvis mentioned the services of Hon. Z. B Vance. At the mention of the name there was deafening and continued applause. The Hou. A. S. Merrimon war- nom inated for ( hief Justice of the Su preme Court by acclamation amid applause Hon. Wal er Clark was nominated by acclamation for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The recent Centennial celebration of the charter was the oc casion of the most brilliant assem blage ever known in the State, and the story told of the University's life in the Memorial Volume would do credit to any institution of learning in America. A Good Suggestion. A suggestion has been made that a call be made upon such persons as have received degrees from Ruther erford College, for the purpose of aiding in rebuilding the Institute. ihis would no doubt be a good idea, as a nucleus might be formed for a substantial fund. Died. ' The little daughter of Mr T. O. Gattis, who resides near the eastern limits of the city, died early this morning, aged 10 years. The funeral took place this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Bennett Smedes, Mrs. t-medes and children returned to the city yes terday. Mr. W. A. B. Branch, the demo cratic nominee for Congress in the First Dktiict, is in the city. Mrs. J.C. Scarborough and children returned this morning from a very pleasant visit to Wake Forest. Dividing up the State and Put ting on the Men. The Old North State has been di vided into fifteen different sections; and definite routes marked out, con necting and including all the large towns andcentres of trade and travel. Active and experienced men are now being selected and instructed to cover thebe routes and sections to tell the people of the State about the next great fair. These men will send dos 'ers and notices of the fair into every family which can be reached from the towns and centres we have named They will take the State Fair to the people now. Sunday School Convention. A convention of the Sunday School workers of the eastern portion of the State is called at Er'enton, Thursday and Friday, September 18th and 19th next. The convention will be attend ed by Mr. William Reynolds, the President of the Fifth International Sunday School Convention and pro bably by one or more specialists. A programme is being prepared, eur bracing some of the best Sunday School talent in the State. The pro gramme will be published as soon as completed. It is the desire and in tention of the executive Committee to make this one of the best conven tions ever held in the State. By order of the Executive Con- mittee. H. N. Skow, Secretary. ' Superintendent Mills, of the Thom- asville Orphanage, tells of his exoe rience with a little orphan who was brought to the depot at Henderson- ville with a view of being carried to the Orphanage. The little creature had never seen a railway engine, and when the train came up she was so frightened that she ran away and couldn't be found until the train was gone. Religion Makes Him Insane. Mt.
