Kicked to Death by his Gun. New Orleans Times Democrat. A young man named Ferguson, living near Troy, Drew county, met with a peculiar but fatal accident recently. He was in the woods hunt ing, and having remained out longer than was expected his family institu ted search for him and found him in an unconsciuus condition in an out of the way place. It appears that he had fired the gun at a squirrel, and the weapon being heavily loaded re coiled and hit him in the stomach, the blow being a serious one. He was taken home and medical aid sum moned, but the physician whs una ble to restore him to consciousness, and last night he died. Advance in Flour, Philadelphia Record. The price of flour is advancing at a rate to alarm consumers, the quota tion in the last ten days showing a rise of 6 cents a bushel in wheat and forty to sixty cents a barrel in flour. The indications are that prices will be still bigher in a short time. Flour which a short time ago sold at $5.10 and $5.85 is now selling at $5 7.1 and $5.85 and in some instances fancy brand as high as $6. The direct cause of the advance is a general shortage in the wheat crop both in this country and in Europe Russia, which generally supplies a large portion of Europe, will have no more this year than enough for her own people, and the demand for American wheat abroad will be lar ger than the supply. Extended hot, dry spells, succeeded by continuous wet weather and storms, have largely neduced the crops in the West and Southwest. The yield of winter wheat 'will be very much below the average, and while the spring wheat may turn out better than is anticipa ted, the crop reports so far received are not verjipromising. Oats add corn have suffered more even than wheat, and of the former less than one third of a crop will be harvested while the corn crop will be only about one half the averagf, Very Close to It. I asked an old oolored man who was i oiling cotton in a warehouse in Ma con if many of his race didn't specu late more or less in the staple, and he promptly replied : "Heaps of 'em. sab." "Did ydu ever buy any futures yourself?" ' "N loot 'zatctly, Bah, but I cum mighty clus to it once." "What stopped you?" "l)e purleece, sah." "But why?" "Kase I was gwine out of de yard at night wid 200 pounds of cotton on my back." 1;. . The Inventor oi Watches and His Picture. According to a German hbrological journal the picture of the inventcr of watches, Peter Herlein, is preserved in the rooms of an association of Ger man, watchmakers at Nuremberg. The question has been raised, ho w eterhktfcer this is a veritable like nB;p(,t$e ,i,nventor of watches, and tho famo evidence has been obtain ed "to ffrcive ; 'its correctness. Few p.rsons who travel have any idea of the speed of a train, and wide divergent e of opinion is noted when ever passengers endeavor to state the rate at which they are traveling. What i said to be the most accurate met ho I of timing a train and the one common among old railroad men is to count tl e number of rail joints the train pattses over in twenty seconds. The rails on nearly all roads are thirty feet in length, and the number passed e ver iu twenty seconds is the speed per hour a train is runnirg. For in stance, if a passenger can count thirty clicks on a mil joint in twenty seconds the train is running at the speed of thirty miles an hour. Actually this method falls a little short, as in the example given above the speed would be nearer thirty one than thirty miles, but it is near enough for all practical purposes. One of the First Diamond Cut ters. Hrnre P. Morse, of Boston, was, says M George F. Kunz in his "Gems and Precious Stones of North America," one of the first to cut dia uiondsinthis country, and the best cutters in the United States today received their training under him H- studied the diamond scientifically and taught his pupils that mathe matical precision in cutting greatly enhanced the beauty of the gems. His artistic sense, judgment and keen pereept'on enabled him to carry the art to a degree of perfection not often attained. His treatment of the dia mond gave a great impetus to the in dustry both here and abroad. In his sh jp a machine for cutting diamonds was invented that did away in a great measure with the tediousness and in accuracy of the old manual process. Thanks to his labors there are now in the United States some of the best cutters in the ..world. There are at present about twelve diamond cut tiug establishments in America, em ploying from one to fifty men each, in all about a hundred, at salaries rang ing from $20 to $50 a week. A 15 Year Old Girl Horse Thief. Syracuse, August 18 Port Byron, a village in Cayuga county, has a 15 year old female horse thief, Amelia Scars is her name. She stole a horse and carriage belonging to Mr. Pad dock a day or two ago, drove to W eed sport, some miles away, and then she gave all the young sports a ride. She was arrested. When quite young Amelia was taken from an orphan asylum by E. H, Hunting, of Cato, with whom she remained nine years. She was fond of horses and was per mitted to be much about the farm, barn, assisting the men in the care of and the stock. She could ride the wild est colt bare backed, and could handle a team as skilfully as an expert horse man. On one occasion Amelia stole from the house, and, bridling a fleet horse, went to Weedsport. She oc cupied the sidewalks as much as she did the roads, and defied all attempts to capture her by presenting an old pistol which she had stolen. She will be sent to the State Industrial School at Rochester. When you are disposed to criticise the way in which another man is do ing some needed work, stop and ask yourself whether you ought not to keep silent until you are r ady to un dertake the work yourself, and until you are sure that you can do it more satisfactorily. It is a most ungra cious business to sit back on your dig nlty and make light of those who are really striving with all their might to help forward a good cause. Nash ville Advocate.
