On account of the Jewish New Year all the stores of our Hebrew friends were closed today, but will be re opened this afternoon at 6 o'clock. We acknowledge receipt of an invi tation to attend the Concord Fair which commences the 30th inst. and continues until the 3rd of October. We learn from George Lane that at the primary meeting at East Raleigh on Friday night he was indorsed as constable. There will be a "Demorest Medal Contest for the Silver Medal at Eden ton Street Sunday School this eve ning. Public invited. Why can't we get the official census for Raleigh? Who is responsible for the delay? What is the matter any how? Cat Supervisor Hawkins en lighten us? Everybody is asking these questions. Chief Police Heartt received a tele gram this morning from Mr. Mills, Agent of the McNish Comedy Com pany, that Mr, McNish was hurt and on that account they would not be able to fill their engagement here to morrow night. Henry L. Thomas, one of the best dry goods salesmen of this city, has accepted a position in the Big Racket Storo. He has charge of the dress goods department. He will be pleased to have his friends call on him. He knows his business well: indeed we know of no oae who knows it better. We wish him much success. The Republican Executive Commit tee met this morning at the court house and had quite an exciting ses sion over the selection of chairman, the contest being between Mr. J. C. L. Harris and Mr. Hamilton T. Jones. On a ballot being taken Mr. Harris was chosen by a large majority, J. H. Young was chosen Secretaiy by acclamation. Rev. Dr. L. L. NaBh preached two very excellent sermons yesterday at Central Church to very large and at tentive congregations. There were two persons that joined the church at the 11 o'clock service on profession of faith. The services in the after noon cf "Song and Experience" was Very interesting and encouraging. The interest is greatly increasing. Last night the altar was crowded, with anxious penitents. There must have been at least 20 kneeling at once and quite a number bowing in the congregation. The indications are that in formation of the proceedings of the Sovereign Grand Lodge that is now in session at Topefe a, Kansas, will be made known to the lodge. The 3d degree will be conferred upon quite a number of candidates. The meeting will be a most interesting one in every way and it is hoped that every mem ber will be present. All Odd Fellows are most cordially invited. Members of the degree staff of Man teo Lodge, No. 8, are hereby urged to meet at their hall tomorrow night promptly at 7:30 o'clock. Personal Mention. Mr. C. B. Wright.of Haw River, was in the city today. Mr. A. T. Washout of Portsmouth, passed through the city this morning on his way .lo his old home. Mr. Claud B. Barbee of the firm of Rand & Barbee wholesale grocers Richmond Va., is in the city, visiting his brother E. B. Barbee Esq. Mr. T. P. Sale, formerly with Oak City Manufacturing Company, more recently connected with the Atlantic Hotel, at Morehead City has accepted a position with D. T. Swindell at the Racket Store. He desires his friends, whom we know to be ufany, to call to see him. Mr. R. H. Gower, Johnston conn ty's Democratic nominee for the House of Representatives, was in the city today, looking bright and cheer ful. ' He says the prospects for his election and the best crops in his county good, all busy picking cotton he reports that his father P. H. Gower Esq., who lives just below Auburn and who lost his left arm in his cotton gin on the 4th inst. is doing well; is now able to walk about and assist in superintending his business. Died. Mr. Joseph Blake, one of House Creek Township's oldest and highly respected citizens died this morning. He was about 80 years of age; he leaves a large family of children, all grown. The burial will take place at his residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Relatives and friends in vited. Republican Convention. The Republican County Conven tion for the purpose cf nominating a ticket for county officers and mem bers of the Legislature, met in Metro politan Hall today. The body was called to order at 12:30 o'clock by J. C. L. Harris, Chairman of the County Executive Committee. All the town ships were represented, a very large majority of the delegates being col ored. J. C. L. Harris was made per manent Chairman by a unanimous vote. He made a brief address.thank ing the convention for the confidence manifested, which was received with applause. James H. Young was chosen permanent Secretary by ac clamation. The convention proceed ed to nominate county officers. O. D. Upchurch was nominated for clerk of the Superior Court by accla mation. J. Rowan Rogers and R. W. Wynne were put in nomination for sheriff. Mr. Wynne was withdrawn and Mr. Rogers was nominated by acclama tion. J. P. H. Adams and K. W. Merritt were placed in nomination for Regis ter of Deeds. A brisk fight sprung up on these nominations, several del egates charging that Mr. Adams had not appointed Republicans in his of fice. A ballot waB taken resulting in the choice of Mr. Adam by a large majority. The nomination was made unanimous. . W. W. Wynne was nominated for Treasurer by acclamation. Dr. H. H. Marshburn was nominat ed for Coroner by acclamation. The nomination for Surveyor was left to the county executive commit tee. D. P. Meacham was nominated for the Senate by acclamation. The following is the ticket for the House of Representatives: W. F. Up church, C. W. Hoover, T. R. Purnell and L. M. Green. A writer in the Forum advises peo pie when they see a tornado or any thing of that sort meandering in their direction not to get excited, but to remain cool and self possessed, just as if a tornado wouldn't snatch the hair off of a self possessed man as quick as any other. He should have coupled with his advice the injuno tion strike for a dug out without ceremony. The dug out is the only thing for which a tornado and "sich" have any respect. A physician in charge of a well known asylum for the care of the in sane, recently said: There is one in fallible test either for the approach or the presence of lunacy. Swindbcl. Under the new law in New York the police arrest boys under sixteen years of age caught smoking ciga rettes. They pounced down on a youngster the other day, and lugged him to the station house, when he turned the joke on them by proving that he was nearly forty years old. The Germans of Baltimore are mak ing big preparations to celebrate German-American Day-October 6th. They are to have a great torchlight parade. Already f 3,000 has been sub scribed for general expenses. The societies will furnish their own bands and torches. An authenticated case of a human nose that bad been cut off being re stored is told of in a medical paper. Operations of the character are often heard of, but almost invariably the reports lack confirmation. The patient was a young man employed in a cotton mill, and the operation was performed by Dr. Kelley, of Grif fin, Ga. The organ was cut cleanly off by a rapidly revolving belt, and had remained where it had fallen fcr about an hour.
