Miss Mildred Lee, daughter of the great chieftain, R. . Lee, is in Ashe ville. Ms. A. M. Woodall has become one of the editors of the Smithfield Her aid. The Sampson county fair is to be held daring the last week in Novem ber, and of course it will be a success The Alamance Gleaner reports the disappearance of Franklin Ingle, the storekeeper of the Beaver Creek Al liance, with cash amounting to $150 or $175 in his pocket. Newton Enterprise: Fifty dollars was realized from the sale of Mr.Fife's pictures in Newton, which was pre sented to Dr. R. L. Abernethy for re building Rutherford College. The game of base ball at Winston, on Saturday last, was for the cham pionship of the South and was played by Winston and Roanoke. The score stood: Winston 4, Roanoke 3. The game was hotly contested by the Roanokes. The Republican county convention of Guilford Saturday last nominated the following ticket: For the Senate W. P. Bynum; for the House, G. W. Clapp and F. B. Chilcutt; sheriff, J. P. Hoskins: clerk, A. H. Holton; reg ister deeds, J. W. Causey; treasurer, J. O. Murrow. At Goldsboro, last Saturday, the Democratic county convention nomi nated the following ticket: B. F. Aycock for the Senate; J. W. Bryan and Hiram J. Ham for the House; W. T. Dortch, tax collector; Jno. T Dees, treasurer; J. H. Grant, sheriff; C. F. Herring, clerk. Among the nominations sent into the Senate by the President is that of Mr. Joseph Batchelor, Jr., of Ral eigh, until recently Second Lieuten ant of the Twenty fourth Infantry of the United States Army, who has been promoted to first Lieutentant of the same. Charlotte News: The tower of the government building in this city is now being roofed over. The general cast of the roof is somewhat disap pointing. A Bquare top would have been decidedly more imposing. The view from the tower is a wonderfully fine one. Six mountain peaks can be seen to the west, and the chimney stacks at Gastonia are visible to the naked eye. A splendid view of Char lotte is had, while farms and farm houses can be seen for miles around. A great many people climbed to the top of the tower to enjoy the view. If the end Were Near. Chicago Herald. If an authoritative bulletin were to be issued this moment from the court of heaven, that in just seven days the world would be destroyed, what pas sion, do you think, would survive daring that final week ? Would it be hate, or envy, or ambition, or the greed of gain t Oh, no; of all the passions that animate the human breast the only one to endure would be love. There would be frenzied rash to grasp love's final opportunity. Mothers would gather their children about them, and there would be too impatience, no cruel putting aside of bothering little arms, no witholding of caresses because they disarranged the well arranged hair and laces. There would be no turning the boys oat into the street for the reason that in their play at uome.they were prone to make havoo with the tidies on the chair backs and the brio a brae on the shelves. There would be no lack of knowledge as to where the girls were at evening, or at train time when the depot swarms with idle loungers. Indifferent husbands and nagging, bickering wives would fore go their coldness and their quarrels, toTIe with one another to redeem the past, daring the brief time allotted them. Friends would be more faith f al, lovers more true, associates more thoughtful of each other's comfort, as the swift hours sped away. But we need no bulletin from heaven to acquaint us of the briefness of love's opportunity. The span of our days is already set, and I wonler if the thought brought home to us, may not quicken us to improve the chance to brighten up our homes with the full and constant shining of the love that is in our hearts, although dimmed and corroded by tne sordid environments of life. SPARKS FltO-'I THE WIRES. From Ycslerdsw's Dispatches. The tariff conferees of Saturday disposed of the paper, hemp, llax and jute schedules. Eighty tulle manufacturers at Ca lais have locked out 5,000 of their em ployees for demanding higher wages. Senator Blair at Washington,D. C, has received the following dispatch from South Carolina: "The under signed, delegates to the State Repub lican Convention of South Carolina, respectfully request you to protect the interest of the colored farmers and laborers of the South by using your influence to defeat the Conger lard bill." At Amher6t, Mass., on Saturday morning at 4 o'clock, while a party was returning from a dance, a man named Davis shot Miss Eva Holden and her escort, James Hardacre. The girl has since died and Hardacre's condition is 6erious. Jealousy was the cause of the crime. Davis has been arrested. Money in Apples. Western North Carolina is without doubt the finest apple region on the Atlantic slope, if not in the whole country. The whole South ought to get its apple supply from this section, and yet even the central and eastern parts of North Carolina get their supplies of winter apples from the North. The high rates of railroad transportation are blamed as the cause for this, and doubtless this is one reason. But the main reason is that the people hare not learned to handle and ship apples. The follow ing rules may be useful: 1. Gather all apples by hand. Those shaken off are not fit to ship. 2. Put only-one variety in a barrel, and only good specimens. Keep the cullings at home for vim-gar. ' 3. Use only good, clean and tight barrels; winter apples should not be shipped in slatted crates or ventilated barrels. 4. Place the apples in the barrel by hand, don't dump them in. Round them up well above the top of the barrel so that the head must be forced in with a lever or screw press. This is the essential point, for if apyles are loose in the barrel they will not ship in good order. 5. Plant only a few standard sorts that are well known in market. There are too many kinds now grown in Western North Carolina. W. F, Mas- sey, Horticulturist, Experiment Sta tion. Wanted. A good salesman for Jewelry at Swindell's.
