Eldridge, editor of the Durham Globe, retires from that pa per and Mr. P. M. Briggs will be the editor ia the future, afsisted by Mr. R. . Carr. Charlotte people are working for another telegraphic line to be located in that city. It is the Postal Line.The Charlotte people deserve great credit for their push and enterprise. The English syndicate which has bought the Laird property adjoining Buena Vista, Va., will, it is said, ex pend $),250,000 in building manufac turing enterprises. Tbe Durham Globe says the report er wishing to save all men harmless, gives fair notice that if the medicine man, who distributed the pestiferous whistles about town, ever comes there again he does so at his own peril. We second the motion. New Berne Journal: Mr. E. M. Pavie is rushing ahead in erecting the new canning factory. It is to be a two story building 32x115 feet with an ad ditional eight foot, full length plat form and a 10x10 office in the rear. Capt. J. C. Blocker, a prominent Republican died at Cedar Creek in Cumberland county, last Friday and was buried on Saturday last. It was thought that his death was caused by over work in taking the census. La Grange Spectator: Mr. Stokes, an agent, was here last week contract ing for hands to go to the turpentine fields in Georgia. He left Monday with about 25 hands, consisting of children, women and men from town and the surrounding country. Durham Sun says a gentleman of that town had a very interesting scene at his residence on Sunday. His children visited him and he was quite happy in their midst. There were six daughters, four sons in laws, and eleven grand children. (There were two more in town who were not present.) Oxford Day: Rev. J. T. Harris, su perintendent of the Oxford Orphan Asylum, removed his family from Durham to our city last evening. They occupy the superintendent's residence on the Asylum grounds. The Day, on behalf of the Oxford citiiens, extends the new comers a most cordial welcome. Concord Times: Last Wednesday John Palmer, colored, came in on the noon train from Salisbury. Deputy Sheriff Propst wanted some money out of him for taxes, and approached him on the subject. Palmer said he did not have any cash. Mr. Propst, however, saw he had a brand new valise, and appropriated it for the State. On opening it, it was found to contain five or six big bottles of whiskey and some clothing. John was taken back a little but rather than part with his whiskey be paid up his taxes for 2 years and went on his way rejoicing. The great lace manufacturing con cern of Wooten fc Mosely, of Notting ham, England, is to be removed to Scranton, Pa., where six acres of land have been given for a location. The plant will be as extensive as that at Nottingham, which employs 3.0C0 persons. The real estate assessment of Rich mond, Va , for 1890, just completed, shows ft gain over the last assessment Jal8&"iOf6,514,6l& Items of Interest. r A Customs officer at Chambery Savoy, shot aud killed an Italian smuggler who was resisting arrest. Mrs. Patrick Maloney,of Milwaukee was fatally injured in a runaway ac cident in Palmyra, Wis, Thursday. Nine new cases and three deaths from diphtheria were reported by the physicians at Brilgeton, N. J., Thursday. The boiler of a threshing machine exploded yesterday morning at Marsh- field, Ohio, killiig two men named Davis and Haynie. Among the arrivals on the City of Berlin at New York yesterday was United States Consul General John C. New, from London. The nomination of Theodore M Schleter, of Tennessee, to be United States Consul at Amsterdam, was yesterday confirmed by the Senate. By fire yesterday morning Messrs. London & Johnson, coffee, tea and spice, 181 and 1S3 Chambers street, New York, sustained aloes of between $15,000 and $20,000. It cost Fred Bowman $1 00 for shoot ing at a cat in Bridgeton, N. J., Thursday. He shot at the cat, but struck a house and broke seventeen window lights which he had tore place. It is now estimated that the lo 8 by the incendiary fire which destroyed the Washington Heights Public School at Chicago, Thursday night, will amount to $4C,C00, The insur ance is $15,000. Charles Webster, the actor, who shot and killed Robert McNeill in a fit of jealous rage on the night of August 20, in New York, was indicted by the grand jury yesterday for murder in the first degree. Colonel Jacob M. Thornberg, ex- member of Congress from the Second Tennessee district, died at Knoxville, at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, aged 53. He was elected to Congress in 1872-74 and '76 as a Republican. France has entered into a contract to supply the Russian Government with an enormous number of rifles. According to the terms of the con tract 500,000 of the weapons will be delivered within eighteen months. A stray balloon, to which was at tached a rope and bag of sand, was captured by farmers about five miles north of Utica, N. Y., Thursday evening. The ropes look as if the basket had been cut off. The balloon is a very large one. A considerable portion of the village of South Haven, Mich., was destroy ed by an incendiary fire, which was discovered about midnight Thursday night. Eleven buildings were burned. The loss is about $70,000; insurance ight. Charles E. Wellborn, a real estate agent, was arrested at Birmingham, Ala., Thursday night, charged with using the mail for fraudulent pur poses. His letter heads stated him to be the representative of "American I imber Land Company." with a capi tal of ten millions, which concern is alleged to be a myth. The Hon. Elijah E. Morse, of Mas sachusetts, has had a good many sto ries told about him first and last, and here comes a correspondent of the Providence Journal with still another Morse had fallen into dispute with McClammy, of North Carolina," he says. "McClammy sometimes uses strong language. Morse affects to have a dislike of rude Saxon. He wound up the conversation as follows: 'On, 1 can't talk with you, McClam my; you lack polish."
