They are here from all sections of the surrounding country. Work oa the new Baptist Chapel in the western suburbs of the city will soon be commenced. The Eettie Bernard Chase Com. pany played to a large and apprecia tive audience last night. It deserves success, and, we hope will continue to receive it. We have the privilege to state up on authority that all uniformed police from the State, will be admitted to State Fair grounds free of charge. The Democratic rally and barbecue at Brookside Park today was quite a success, a large number of persons being present. We note the following brethren of the press in the city: St. Clair, of the Sandford Express; Haydn, of the Charlotte Chronicle; Dowd, of the Mecklenburg Times; Butler of the Clinton Caucasian and Thomas, of the Louisburg Times. They are taking in the Convention and taking down the barbecue. Fire. The cotton gin of Mr. Sam Watts, at the Rufus Ivey place, on Louis burg road was destroyed by fire yesterday evening. It is thought that the fire originated in seed cotton that bad been brought to tne gin upon which some one had been riding and smoking, having dropped some fire upon the cotton. Everything was destroyed loss obout $1,100; no in surance. Mr. Watts tells us he will have a gin running in a house nearby the same place in about four days. Pergonal Mention. Guessing, Guessing, Guessing. The next State Fair promises to make a race of guessers of the people of this State. Guessing for a church carpet, guessing for the Soldiers' Home and guessing for twenty five dollars in gold on the population of the State. Another guess from Ral eigh, on the number of people in the State, was filed. Who next? Some body will have that twenty five dol lars. The guess, nsme. Dost office ad. dress, and a two cent stamp are the conditions. There are thousands in this city who can guess as near as Superintendent Porter can count. Died. We regret to announce the death of Mr. M. L. Parker, which took place at his residence on Jones street, yes terday afternocn at 6 o'clock. Mr. Parker was for some years, book keeper for the Oak City Manufactur ing Company of this city, and had a large number of friends who will deeply regret his loss. His death oc curred from typhoid fever. He leaves a wife and one chill with whom we deeply sympathize. The funeral took place tLis afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Baptist Tabernacle. The deceased was a brother of Mr. M. A. Parker, of this city and was 27 years old. At the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Perkinson, on East Hargett street, this evening at 3 o'clock of typhoid fever, Miss Carrie Perkinson, aged about 18. The death of this most estimable young lady has cast a gloom over a large circle of relatives and friends with whom we most deeply sympathize. The time of the funeral will be announced here after. The two lodges of Odd Fellows turned out in force today to meet Grand Sire Busbee, who arrived on the one o'clock train. They were ac companied by the Durham Cornet Band. The procession marched from the depot to Fayetteville street, thence to Morgan and .thence to Salisbury down which it proceeded to the resi dence of Mr. Busbee. On arrival at the residence Grand Representative J. H. Cordon welcomed Mr. Busbee in a most beautiful address alluding in most fitting terms to his elevation to the high and honorable position of Grand Sire of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of the world. Mr. Busbee was escorted from the depot in a phteton drawn by four horseB,tastef ully deco rated. The committee of reception also occupied carriages. The Durham band discoursed most elegant music which was highly applauded by all who heard it. The reception is but a merited tribute to one of our most highly es teemed citizens whose elevation in the noble order of Odd Fellows is a source of the highest gratification to our entire people.
