Fine site for a depot, bat no depot in sight. We cite this from the best authority. How about that sidewalk at the southeast corner of Fayetteville and Morgan streets? It's a bad place. Tear down the unsightly bridge over the railroad on Eillsboro street and put up a new one. Iron pre ferred. The cotton factory is now running on full time and has orders far ahead. Let us have another. The system of numbering houses and the postal free delivery goes into operation at Durham next Saturday. Our physicians are rather resting on their oars. The health of the city was never better. Students are still coming iu to our female schoois. They are flourishing beyond all precedent. ' Wilmington street today wns liter ally packet! with wagons loaded with cotton. The receipts were heavy and prices good. The keeper of the Capitol will no doubt soon be fixing up the two chambers for the Legislature. A new coat of paint on the galleries would helo greatly. Why not add electric lights? The old breastworks around the city erected in he early part of the war have all disappeared, and a few small elevations are all that is left of the great Chinese wall to keep the yankees out. It is said that a member of the par ty proposing to purchase the street car line, was here last Monday. This looks as if an electric railway wat looming up in the near future. There was nothing of importance doing at the capitol today. The Gov ernor is off for the Weldon fair and the private Secretary is doiug the iTonors with his usual urbanity. Candidates of both political parties were busy today in attending to the "dear people." As the election ap proaches, there will be many a politi cal "love feast " Registration returns are fast being received from different sections of the State. "There seems to be a notable falling off in the colored registration in the central and eastern counties. The fruit crop cannot be considered an eLtire failure, if we note the large supply of tine apples on sale in the various stores. We have rarely seen better specimens, but prices are ruling rai her high It has been suggested that the Bite on which now Btands the old Hay wood mansion corner of Fayetteville and Morgan streets, would be a good one for the proposed new hotel. It is admirably located and specially con venient for members of the Legisla ture, attendants on the Supreme court etc. No better site could be selected. , V We learn from the Fayetteville Observer that a sham battle between the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry and the Lumber Bridge Light Infantry is being discussed.and will no doubt constitute one of the attractive features of the approach ing Cumberland Fair. They are both Crack companies and will muster about; 50 men each. We will venture to assert that. Lumber. Bridge will "take the cake." Scottish Chief. i laming "dodgers" are be ng scat tered around the city today, illustra tive of the doings at the circus next week. A call at the Mayor's cilice today developed nothing of iuportance. The city is unusually quiet and the police are absolutely having a good time. The civil docket of Wake Superior Court is fast being cleared under the energetic rule of Judge Boykin, who is winding golden opinions from the bar. With the election and circus next week, the people of Raleigh will be abundantly stirred up, The next big thing on docket will be the Legisla ture, when the fun will commence in earnest. There is a complete lull in the mat ter of the extension of the Albemarle and Raleigh Railroad. In fact, it seems to have gone into the deepest retirement. Can't the Chamber of Commerce resurrect the matter.? There are a good many strangers of the legal fraternity in the city, at tending the Supreme Court. The docket is being cleared with unusual promptness. We hear, unofficially that there will be an application before the next General Assembly for an extension of the corporate limits of Raleigh half a mile each way. A cotton merchant told us this morning that at least forty thousand bales of cotton may be considered in sight for Raleigh this season. This looks like a genuine business revival and our people ought to be happy. A party of gentlemen, among them some of our leading capitalists, were today discussing the matter of a knit tine factory for Raleigh. Hope it may be consummated. The factory in Greensboro has started -out under the most favorable auspices. The deicand for small residences still continues, and our capitalists could not put their money in better paying property. It is an evidence of the steady, but sure increase of the population of Raleigh. So heavy is the business of the cot ton compress, that it is impossible to keep up with the demands, although it is running day and night. Im mense quantities of cotton are on the platform waiting its turn. Meeting of Chief's. We notice that the rail roads throughout the State have signed their willingness to give a free pass to one Chief of Fire Department from every town in the State to attend a meeting cf Chief's to be held in Greensboro on Nov. 12th. The object of such a meeting can easily be seen to be of immense benefit not only to the men themselves, but it will be felt throughout tl.e State and by every town sending a represents five to the ? conference; not only at a time of tire, where the benefits of an exchange of ideas will , assert it self, but in the safety felt by the commun ity in general wherever a community exists which possesses a fire Chief with interest enough in his duties as Chief to take advantages of every op portunity to better acquaint himself with his duties and pepare himself for the hour when he must shrink from no duty, but be ready for any emer gency; be capable of not only meet ing it but to successfully overcome it when met. We would respectfully suggest that every Journal of the State insert a notice with reference to the above, and from : time to time re fer to the matter and insist on the at tendance of the i proper person from its town. Brothers you cannot be too particular about this matter it means dollars and cents iu addition to an et sy and secure feeling when you lay down at night. For Bent. y Three nice houses; neighborhood and water the best. oc29 8t Julius Lewis & Co. Edenton Street Church. The meetings at Edenton Street Church are still in prrgrees with un abated interest. Last night Rer. Mr. McCullen preached a most inter- esting sermon which was listened to with marked attention by a large congregation. The meetings will con tinue every night during the week, and the public are cordially invited to attend. Notice to I O. O. F. Beaton Gales Lodge meets tomorrow night. The Soldier s Home. We cannot too earnestly appeal to our people to aid in furnishing this noble charity with such contributions as can be spared. Surely nearly every family in our midst has-something that, would render comfortable the inmates and there is no object that appeals more directly, not only to our patriotism but to our 'common hu-, manity.
