Ferrell & Wiggs, in behaif of their wives, daughters of Larkin Smith, com menced an action to have Larkin Smith declared incompetent to at tend to his ' basisess. Thereupon Chas. H. Smith procured a power of attorney for Messrs. Fuller & Snow and Batchelor & Devereux directing them to dismiss the suit at the cost of Ferrell and Wiggs. What a Bob Tailed Dog Did. A hob tailed dog has unseated the mayor of Newport, Ky. That town has an ordinance taxing dogs one dollar and imposing a fine of three dollars on any owner who refuses to pay the tax. At one house in the town this yellow cur had taken up his quarters, and when the assessor came around he listed him to the owner of the house' against his pro test. He refused to pay the tax and was fined in the mayor's court three dollars. Declining to pay the fine he waB sent to prison. On his release he sued the mayor and town marshal $5000 damages. On the trial of the cause it was discovered that the may' or had failed to quality as the law directs, and the court decided that that a 1 of his acts were illegal, as he was not the mayor of the town. Thus has a ten cent cur broken up a city government. 2 That Negro Preacher's Shoe. Charlotte News. Every once in a while that oldstorv about the immense shoe that was manufactured in Boston for a Le. ro preacher in North Carolina,is revived and started along the line.. It has been going the rounds for ten years, but still our people would not believe it. Those who held out that it was a canard., must now -give up, for the preacher has ordered a new pair, and the shoe for bis right foot is now on exhibition at Gilreath's store. The factory is still at work on the other shoe, and is pushing thii gs to get it completed before the effects of the McKinley bill are felt on the leather market. The shoe is an enormous thing and will hold a bushel of corn. A Hotel for Northern People. We know of no opening for the in vestment of capital and well directed energy that is so sure of large results as a first class hotel, suitable for the entertainment of northern people who come south every year to pend the winter months. Wherever in the south these hotels are properly kept and properly advertised north, they become very profitable to the pro prietors, whether in large or small towns. Many of the former summer resorts for our own people south have become winter resorts for northern people and are consequently crowded in winter inbtead of being shut up as formerly. This flow of northern peo ple of large means to the south every winter is increasing each year. Now why cannot Raleigh have one or more of these resort hotels? If we can ever get the current started this way, it will deepen and widen rapidly. It has at every point in the south where the accommodations were at all at tractive to such people. Charleston, S. C, has al owed hun dreds of thousands of dollars to pass by her and jingle in the pockets of other towns and cities, just by her slowness and shortsightedness. But latterly the overflow has kept the city crowded all the winter. Raleigh is soon to be on a great north and south trunk line; then why not take advan tage of the opening and become a principal objective point on this line, before the current has cut its groove to other and more enegetic cities and sections? If some of our capitalists would erect a first class hotel with suitable attractions for the entertainment of people who demand first class accom modations and are willing to pay first class (prices, say from four to ten dol lars a day, and would secure some live northern hotelist who runs some northern fashionable summer resort, to come down and run this hotel in winter and advertise it at his summer resort in summer, success would be assured and Raleigh would be full of just the people we need to come among us. No place in the south has failed that has gone at it in this way We must have " accommodation to meet the requirements of-the very wealthy or they will not como among us. When they do come and are pleased with the entertainment they get, they will come again and bring others and linger. Our climate at tracts them and if surroundings please them they will linger. Their coming will be known and attract others, Raleigh should have a first class win ter resort hotel for northern guests. It is one of the essentials. A Liberal Donation to Central M. E.
