The cotton receipts at Fayetteville are 6,000 bales more than came in up to this time last year. iA modern jail has just been com pleted for Henderson county. It has steel cages and is heated by steam. Ei-Assistant Postmaster General J. S. Clarkson is spending some time at the Battery Park Hotel at Asheville for his health. The Hendersonville Guide says that Mr. Jones, hailing as he Bays from Morristown, Tenn.,was arrested there Friday for forging a check of $250 00 on V. S. Lusk, of Asheville. He is still in jail to await the result. The grand jury, in the United States district court, has found a true bill against W. Y. Sellars, late post master at Lebanon.Columbus county, for embezzlement, He is now in jail at Dallas, Texas, and comfesses his crime. Mr. ML. Sigman, of this township, tells of a girl iu his immediate neigh borhood, between three and four years old, who chews tobacco, dips snuff, smokes, plays cards, picks the banjo, swears, and has had to be weaned by main strength. States ville Landmark. While walking upon Main street in Warrenton one night last week, Mr. Alfred Plummer, of Middleburg, was assaulted and robbed by George Jones, colored, who has been in the penitentiary for fle years. Jones was arrested this morning and all the stolen articles found upon his person. A horrible accident occurred in Warrenton late last Thursday even ing, resulting in the death of the twelve year old son of Mr. Joseph Rodwell. The boy was there attend ing school and in some way was ruu over by the train and instantly kill en. The remains were taken to the home of the parents in the country and buried Friday. Tuesday night about 10 o'clock about 5 miles from here Mr Zodoc Woodard who lives in Born Hill township was killed by his mule which ran away with him throwing him out and turning the buggy over on him. Shouse, colored, and two or three other parties were arrested un der suspicion, but were released for want of evidence. The fire was start ed in one of the cells where a Winston darkey was confined, and it is believ ed that it wts the intention of some party or parties to release him Mr. Airy News. Homing Pigeons in Russia. The Russians established pigeon stations in various parts of their ter ritory about sixteen' years ago. They have eight stations in all. There are five offlcers.twelve trainers and twen ty four servants connected with the pigeon service. It is their duty to look after the carrier pigeons, and see that they are always in perfect health and condition, and ready for use at any moment. A bushel of grain is al lowed to each bird. New York Even ing Sun. Confidence is being restored ir Wall street. Several smashups be have been the result. Robbed or Its Poetry. London Tit-Bits. Dr. Nachtigal, the celebrated Afri can explorer, was once the guest of a rich Hamburg merchant The mer chant's son, a yonng man of some what sentimental temperament, said that his dearest wish was to ride across the desert on the back of a camel. He though such a ride must be very poetical indeed. "My dear young friend," replied the explorer, "I can tell you how you can get a partial idea of what riding a camel on the desert of Africa is like Take an office stool, screw it up as high as possible, and put it into a wagon without any 8priugs;then seat yourself upon the stool and have it driven over uneven and rocky ground during the hottest weather of July or August after you have had nothing to eat or drink for twenty four hours, and then you will get a faint idea of how delightfully poetic it is to ride on a camel in the wilds of Africa." " Iu Time of Peace, Prepare for War." N. C. Experiment Station. The owners of vineyards and or chards as soon as all the leaves have fallen should carefully rake the leaves into small piles and burn them. All the shrunken, dried up fruit on the vines and trees should also be remov ed and cast into the fire. These shrunken fruits and most of the fallen leaves contain vast numbers of the winter spores of the fungimi dew, black rot, anthrocnoseand scab which may have caused such a loss the past season. Farmers shcu'd also clean up their fields soon after Christmas and burn all the trash and weeds in fence cor ners. These trash piles harbor nox ious insects, weed seeds and fungi. It is much cheaper to destroy them now than to fight th m next summer. Peculiar Style of Embalming. A petrified human body a body which was turned from flesh to white marble as hard and firm as the stone itself. This is the .veiy strange and exceptional sight in an undertaking establishment in Atlanta, Ga. It is a case which will be spoken of and treatises written upon in future works on embalming. The body is that of Edward Soundstrong. Forty five days ago Mr. Soundstrong died and his re mains were taken to be embalmed. Some days ago the undertaker notic ed that the flesh was crystalizing. The fluids used in embalming are ex ceedingly poisonous, and as Mr. Soundstrong had died from mercurial poison it was believed the action of one poison on another was producing the strange result. Gradually the face of the dead man became whiter and whiter, harder and harder, until now it is nothiDg but white stone, as white and firm as marble. It is reported that Jay Gould has secured control of the Union Pacific. Verily he "wants the earth." Daniel S. Appleton, the great New York publisher died yesterday of apoplexy.
