K. - 1 mm. VOL. IB, A T.JBXO "EE, SATTJBDAT, DECEMBER 13, 18QO. JSTO. 68 ; I KOTES ABOUT THE CITY. What Our Reporters See and Hear Worth Giving to Our Readers News in Brief. Nice whiter 'weather. Oysters in their prime. Don't forget your taxes. Partridges Id abundance. The street sweeper is a daisy. Considerable ice this morning. Cotton receipts today heavy. Prices continue high. Let us have the D- Q. I's. at Christ mas. They never fail to create fun See DOtice of W. G. Upchurch and others, for charter. A large crowd of country people in town today. They seem to have plenty of money and are spending it freely It is a rule that Christmas comes bat once a year but it is a good rule to go buy. The cotton receipts thus far, this searon are 12,805 bales in excess of last year. This is a fine showing. g. Santa Claus left Iceland yesterday and will travel as fast as his big bun die will pei mit, arriving in Raleigh by 7 p. m. Dec. 24th. The oyster, fowle, confectionery and other trade will be tremendous during the next two weeks. The business men are happy, and so seems almost everybody else. Many amusements are in store for the Christmas holidays; among them are a grand hunting excursion which will be participated in by some of our best sportsmen. A pocket book containing a small sum of money was found on the street today. The owner can get it by call ing at this office and describing the money. Would it not be well to have Met ropo itan Hall furnished with opera chairs and otherwise improved be fore the Legislature meets. We ex pect a great run in the amusement line during the season. The proposition made by the Vis itob for closing the stores at 7 p. m seems to be meeting with encourage ment. and there is a prospect that the plan will be carried out after th 1st of January next. It is a good idea, and when well gotten into wi) work beneficial all around. The Charlotte News in conmemo ration of its second anniversary has been enlarged to sever: columns. This is an evidence of prosperity for which the proprietors are to be coogratula ted. The News is a most excellent paper. The action of the Board of Alder men in amending the charter of the Raleigh Street Railway, and, thereby ensuring a first class system, is surely deserving of the highest commenda tion. We cannot expect the expen diture of any considerable amount of capital among up, unless there be something like mutual concessions The Board of Aldermen have done nobly in the premises. Our Dead Heroes. Mr Joseph O. Brown has received and forwarded the sum of $113.60 to Fredericksburg, Va , forthe purpose Y of placing headstones over the graves of North Carolina Soldier 8 buried in the cemetery in that city. ; A Good, Sermon. The sermon preached by Rev. E. C. Edwards at .Wilson " on Wednesday night was a grand effort indeed. It showed the speaker not only to be a man of much learning, bat a preacher of righteousness in the highest and best sense of that expression. The people of Wilson and the Conference , were charmed by him and were loud in praises of the discourse. He is one of the transferred men from the Vir inia Conference. , Select Norfolk oysters 45o. quart, Morehead City oysters 25c. quart, to day. Phone 28 Z. T. Johnson. , Extra Couches. ! To accommodate parties attending the Southern Interstate Immigra tion Convention, at Asbeville, N. C, the Richmond and Danville R R will provide extra coaches on regular trains of Dec. loth and lGth, and will also havo extra sleeping cars at Greensboro to gu through to Ashe- ville on those da) s, in addition to the regular terrke. To reserve space in these sleep ing curs, application should be made io the ticket ogeut at Greens boro, or to W. A. Turk, Division Pas senger Agent, Raleigh, N. C. Things that Ought to Be. The Women's Christian Temper ance Union should get Francis Mur phy, the great temperance evaugeiist here He only asks entertainment for himself and wife: a place to hold his meetings, and the privilege of col lections. The police should break up the chalk marking of private fences Make a fev arrests and put the fine on them if necessary. It is a growing outrage. Low places in sidewalks tbat.be come muddy in wet weather should be filled up now while it is dry. Could there net be some systematic police inspection for this purpose? Personal Mention. Dr. Jacobs' little sonis quite 6ick at his residence on North Blount street, Mr. and Mrs. Josephus Daniels are in Wilson, attending the Methodist Conference. Rev. Thos. E. Skinner is sick. Gov. Fowle has decided to attend the Immigration Convention at Ashe ville next week. Judge Woniack arrived in the city yesterday. Mr. B. C. Beck with is attending the Methodist Conference at Wilson. Rev. 1 McK. Petting-er, rector of the church of the Good Shepherd with his family have arrived, and are the guests of Bishop Lyman. Bad Manners at Concerts, &c. Of course there are some people that feel their importance; and of course they seem afraid that every body else may not recognize their presence on all occasions. For this re ison, we suppose it is that there wer". those, at Metropolitan Hall last night who felt it necessary that they should talk while others were intent ly listening to the sweet strains of music made by the Boston Symphony Club. There are times when talking out or even whispering at a musical con cert is not only bad manners but is a positive injury to those who engage in it. And it were better that one should keep away from the concert than to thus expose and injure them selves. A Course of Lectures, Readings, &c. Raleigh should have a first class course of lectures and readings during this winter. We know that it is gene-rally understood that such will not pay. But we believe if the proper ef fort was made a sufficient number of season tickets could be disposed of to justify the undertaking. Suppose the offer of a ticket to ten lectures or readmgs should be made for $5. In our opinion 200 of them could be sold. This would guarantee the expense or so nearly do so that the engagements might be made. Some of the finest enteitainments known to the public in other cities are furnished through lecture bureaus. And their effect upon the community is of the very best. They may em brace a large range Historical, Bio graphical, Humorous, Pictorial, &c. We hope the matter will receive the attention of those who are in the habit of providing public entertain ment. S. X. Metzger & Sons' pork packing house of Elmira, N. Y., was burned last evening. "Papa," said little Freddy as he came into the library where his father was sitting, "Is it right for our new minister to kiss mama?" "No, my boy," the father replied, while the angry blood made his face for a moment as red as the tradition al beet. "Btit why does my little boy ask the question? Has he ever seen the minister kiss mamma?" "No, papa," replied little Freddy in an earnest way, "but I saw him com pretty near it this morning, just the same. Mamma and he were in the parlor and I was in the front hall playing with my blocks, but I could see mamma and the minister every time 1 looked through the open door at our big looking glass. But neither mamma nor the minister could see me. Pretty soon I saw the minister put his arm around mamma's neck and try to kiss her. But mamma pushed him away as if she were frightened, and she said: 'Charles, please be careful ho v you act in this house. If you wish so much to kiss me, meet me in some lonely dell on the day of the church picnic and you can satisfy your desire.' " P. S. Mamma failed to attend the church picnic. SPARKS FROM THE WIRES. If you never did you are fortunate. We made one the other day. We may have made others but this special one we are anxious to allow some one to profit by. We cut a handsome Brus sels carpet for a room the other day and by some means made an error in the measurement, and the carpet did not fit 'twas too small. We had to cut another for the room and we now have this misfit one on hand. It is worth 90c per yard; it will fit a room 15x16 feet. If you can use it you can have it for 70c per yard. It would fit a larger room by using a border. It's a big bargain. It's our mistake. We are the losers you are the gainer if you buy it. The pattern is the hand somest we had. It's a beauty and would please almost any one. We have an elegant line of all kinds of carpets and rugs. Our prices, as you well know, are the lowest you will find anywhere, at Swindell's. Phone 113.
