Hear Worth Giving to Our
Readers News in Brief.
SpartacuB.
Help th poor.
Christmas eve's eve.
Merchants supremely happy.
Great dramatic event tonight.
The air is filled with Christmas.
The stores are jammed with folks.
Fill Metropolitan Hall to its utmost
capacity tonight.
Tomorrow will be the great rush
specially for toys.
See advertisement of rooms for rent
by Williamson & Upchurch.
Sheriffs coming in freely to settle
their taxes. This looks like a good
sign in money matters.
Yesterday the Supreme Court
granted a new trial to xeiadine, the
hob. son county murderer.
Christmas exercises will be held in
the Sunday school room of the First
Baptist church tonight commencing
at 7:30 o'clock.
The next term of the Agricultural
and Mechanical Colleere will com
mence Jan. 2d next. An increased
attendance is expected.
There is a sadness about the yelp of
the turkeys just now that are cooped
in front of the groceries on the street
that well nigh makeB us ashamed of
our carnivorosity.
The Christmas number of the North
Carolina Teacher, published by
Messrs. Alfred Williams & Co,
of
Raleigh, is on our table. It is a hand
some publication, of convenient size
and well edited.
The'city is alive with shoppers to
dav. The large stocks of toys that
seemed a few days ago to be greatly
in excess of the demand of the mar
ket are rapidly disappearing, and we
'judge from present appearance that
there will be very little toy stock left
when Christmas is over.
When we read the accounts of the
blizzards, snow, sleet and other styles
of disagreeable, weather aud th
nnmnaraihe weather we arehavjoi;
in Raleigh, we can but congratul
ftiirsfilves and all our neighbors for
the sup rb weather we are having
and for that matter, the matchless
p.litrmtp of this rect'on. It is unsur
passed.
The Baptist Tabernacle opened
Christmas week last night by receiv
ing contributions for the poor. It was
a sight to gladden hearts, as presents
of all kinds were brought in. An
abundance of useful articles, such as
flmir. Rnarar. coffee, clothing of all
cj " I
Kinds, and playthings for the chil
dren. The long tables were filled with
choice things, while the cash coutri
button was very large. The school
and friends assembled and had
haDDV time. Addresses were made by
the untiring and efficient superin
tendent, N B. Broughton, also by the
pastor and Prof. Wood. Great prepa
rations are being made for the Christ
mas festivities of the church
school for Friday night.

tance will come up for consideration.
A.J. Williams, Foreman.
MacLean in Spartacus Tonight.
Physically he is endowed with the
"requirements of the character. His
Spartacus was a very fine piece of
acting. Miss Prescott handled the
character of Seuona, says the Louis
ville Post, with an artistic finish and
grace which proves her fine histrionfc
abities. v -
; Mr, Gladstone is suffering from a
jold and has not been present in the
lurch at Hawarden since Saturday.
Supreme Court.
The following are among the opin
ions rendered by the Supreme Court
yesterday afternoon:
State vs. Oxendiue, from Robeson;
new trial.
Hodges vs. Transit company, New
Hanover; no error.
County Board of Education vs.
State Board of Education, from Gran
ville; no error.
Smith vs.Sumiuerfield.f rom Wayne;
in o' ion to reinstate allowed.
Kind Donations.
Mr. D. L. Schiveley, now of Wash
ington City but formerly a highly es
teemed citizen of Raleigh, is here
spending a few days. Mr. Fchlveley
is much interested in the matter of
the es Confederate soldiers' home
and has been the recipient of several
donations in its behalf from residents
of Washingtbn City. Among those
who have kindly aided Mr. Schiveley
in the premises, and who have other
wise shown attention are Thomas J,
Luttrell, a well known business man
of Washington and an ex Confederate,
also Mr.Pursell,Mr.Hume and Messrs,
Woodward & Lothropp of the same
city. .' hese gentlemen are all en
gaged in business of a prosperous
kind, an.t exhibit the greatest inter
est in the establishment of he home
for ex Confederate soldiers. Mr.
Schiveley is surely entitled to the
thanks of all North Carolinians for
his zeal in the noble cause. He is the
recipient of a very high testimonial
letter from Mrs. Geo. E. Pickett
wife of the great Confederate general
in which Mr. Schiveley is highly
commended for his efforts in the
cause.
Personal Mention.
Mrs. P. H. Andrews has returned
to the city.
Ad jutant General Glenn.of the State
Guard, is iu the city.
Mr. Jno. G. Williams, of the Geor
gia, Carolina & Northern Railroad, is
in the city. He is a Raleigh boy.
Maj. R. 8. Tucker returned to the
cit yesterday from the eastern part
of the State.
Hou. C. M Cooke, of Louisburg, is
id llic city.
Kev B B. Culbreth, the pastor of
Warreu circuit, called to see us this
morning We were glad to see him
looking bo well, and always enjoy the
good cheer he so generally carries
with him.
Rev. Th08. E. Skinner has recov
ered from his recent sickness.
Mrs. Mills H. Brown went to States
ville today to attend the bedside of
her mother who is very sick.
An Arkansas Methodist conference
has suspended from his ministerial
functions Rev. N B. Fizer, because
he ran for Governor of the State in
the last campaign. The parson failed
of election, and it seems like a double
infliction to compel him to lose both
his pulpit and the Gubernatorial
chair. It is evident that the Arkan
sas Methodists do not believe that re
ligion aud politics go together. We
are inclined to the belief, however,
that they would have forgiven the
brother if 'he had been successful in
bis campaign.
Naked Children.
Fully three-fourths of the babies of
the world go naked until they get to
be five or six years old. The Cana
dian Indians keep their babies naked
up to a certain point, and as for the
little Coreans, t hey wear nothing but
a short shirt until they are as old as
our school boys. Little Egyptians of
both sexes trot around' without any
clothes on, and the poorer portions of
the Chinese children are often with
out clothes. I have seen quite large
boys and girls naked in Havana,
Cuba, and in southern California, or
rather on the Calif ornian peninsula.

Christmas Work of the King's
Daughters.
The "Cross-Bearer's Circle" of the
King's Daughters are making a spe-j
cial effort to help the poor, and to do
something by which those who live
in homes of destitution may be made
to enjoy this happy Christmas season,
and they appeal to those who are
blessed with plenty to aid them in
their work of love. From three o'clock
until eight this evening the Daugh
ters will be in the Bible class rooms
at Edeuton Street M. E. Church for
the purpose of receiving donations.
Old clothing, provisions or cash will
be thankfully received and judicious-
y distributed,, and there are many
families in our midst who are sorely
in need of the help that may be given
in this way. Then there are num
bers of children to whom Santa Claus
never comes. Their little hearts would
be gladdened by dolls, toyB, candies,
nuts, etc. Let us, then, whoso chil
dren are looking forward so eagerly
to the coining of Santa Claus remem
ber these little ones, and out of our
abundance send gifts to the other
children of the same King.
Help Them.
Old Father Time is fast ebbing
away aud the joyous Christmas sea
son will soon be upon us. The spirit
of festivity and glee seems to be in
spiring almost every one, and wher
ever you go you find people of all
stations planning for the delight and
pleasure of others. Hundreds of
liHle hearts are beating in earnest
expectation of a visit from the patron
saint of Christmas old Santa Claus.
But while this is the bright side of
the picture, there is another, and it
is cast over v ith the shades of gloom
and disappointment. There are score?
of poor little boys and girls in this
good city of ours who will be bereft
of the glad influences of the season.
Kris Kringle will not visit them be
cause the fortunes of life have not a!
lowed them to vie with more favored
ones. Poor little creatures! Is there
a heart that that does not go out in
sympathy for their childish distress,
and is there a hand so miserly as not
to help them, if possible. Let us all
remember the poor at this blessed
season. We will feel better for it
God bless the little ones and give
them aid in this time of joy. Remem
ber Him who said, "Suffer little chil
dren to come unto me, and forbid
them not."
HORRIBLE!
A Woman Suffocated in a Ward
robe.
Mrs. Emma Lowery was found dead
at her home in New Tork on Sunday
afternoon by her husband, shut up in
her wardrobe. She was standing up
right, cold and stiff in death: Her
husband went to the wardrobe to
look for a suit of clothes and it being
somewhat darkened he did not see
the object clearly and in reaching for
his clothes caught hold of the stiff.
clammy hand of bis dead wife. The
Doctor thinks she died of alcoholism
and suffocation. Horrible !
Booming.
The Salisbury Truth says: "Ral
eigh, N. C, is booming. The South
Raleigh Improvement Company will
apply for a charter for a phosphate
and fertilizer works, cotton mills, and
also for aland and improvement com
pany. The company, which is com
posed of some of the wealthiest men
in Raleigh, is arranging to build
cotton factory, to cost $150,000. cotton
seed oil mills and mills to convert
North Carolina phosphates into com
mercial fertilizers."

One Christmas at a Time.
Some DeoDle are 6ayinj.-, "I with it
was Christmas all the time." Well,
we don't want to judge, but we do
think this kind of feeling looks a
little like swine, Swindell and all
his lieutenants and lieutenanteses
are willing to have but ouo Christ
mas. Never did we expect to soil so
many goods in so short tiiae an we
have been selling for the last two
days. People come in and say give
me a fur cape. Another, give me a
heiliarope serge dress and trimmings
And some one tlse, holding their
breath waiting: for their turn to be
waited on. Well, what will you have
first, madam? Give me a suit of nice
clothes for each of the boys 4, 6 and
8 years old; a pair of shoes for Henry
and Lula. Now come up stairs;
want a carpet for the parlor as Pat'
tie has a suitor axd we are expecting
a wedding at our house right early;
and erandma wants some of those
flannel undershirts, and a nice stylish
hat for myself. And this is about the
wav the trade has been this week.
One Christmas a year is enough at

A Kansas judge settled on a novel
plan to get a verdict from a j ury that
had been out fifty two houra in a lar
ceny case. He sent for a preacher
and had a two hours' service, a one
hour sermon included, held at
o'clock in the morning, in the jury
room. The jury reported a verdict of
guilty in less than an hour after the
services concluded. The attorneys
for the defense have tiled a motion
for a new trial. New OrWis Delta,
