BY fcOSK HART WICK THORPE.
A queen in ber beautiful garments,
She stands on the ramparts today
To herald ihe dawn, and the cere .
Of her past are folded away.
Bhe etanda with the prophets and
sages;.
She speaks, and hei tongue Is a
flame,
Leaping forth from fires which for
ages
Have smoldered in silence and
shame.
Her feet have come up from the val
leys; They are climbing the mountains of
light;
At her call the world rouses and ral
lies, BeariDg arms in the battle of right.
She treads on the serpent that strug
gles And grinds out its life 'neath her
heel;
She grapples with sorrows that wrong
her,
Converting her woe into weal;
Made strong through her slaughtered
affections,
She comes with her sons by her
side,
An angel of power and protection,
Their beacon light,leader and guide.
No longer a timorous being,
To cringe and to cry 'neath the rod
But quick to divine, and far seeing,
She hastens the purpose of God.

We Miss the State Papers.
Charlotte News.
All the State papers have shut
down for the holidays, and the flews
feels mighty lonesome. In our mail
today we got two or three metropol
itan dailies, three patent medicine
circulars, and a pot metal prospectus,
"You never miss the" water 'till the
well run9 dry."
The Hews haB at different times
voiced its appreciation of the excel
lenceof the North Carolina papers,
both daily and weekly, and we think
this a good time to once more refer
to the State papers. The Democrat
is the only paper we get from Ashe
ville ;and cit ' is a credit to Western
North Carolina. The Daily Citizen
is Baid to be a good paper, but we
never see it. Durham has a fine lit
tie paper in the Sun, edited by Mr.
Jas. A. Robinson, -who formerly did
ne vspaper work in Charlotte, Ral
eigh was never bo well supplied with
papers as at present. Capt.. Ashe'6
old reliable News and Observer con
tinues to maintain its fine standard;
the State Chronicle remains a rat
tl ing good daily, andtheEvEMive
Visitor fills the needs of Raleigh for
a live afternoon paper. Wilmington,
with the Star, Messenger and Review
could not be beter fixed in the way
of papers. Greensboro has the Daily
Record and Workman, the Patriot
and the North State. Salisbury's
Herald and Watchman ;are doing fine
work, for that town. Concord has
the bright and breezy Standard and
the influential Times. Monroe's in
terests are. looked after by the Ex
press. The Statesville Landmark is
as bright as ever, and if Statesville
was proud of it years ago it should
be more so now, for you may pick out
the best weekly in any particular
Southern State and it will not beat
the landmark
There are a good many other of our
State exchanges we would like to
mention, but we have not the space
today.- It gives the News pleasure to
note that the State press is, appa rently,
in better condition now than
it has been since the war. The edit
ors seem to thrive, and they deserve
to, for North Carolina never had a
more able, energetic, or more vigor
ous set of editors than the set now
presiding over her newspapers.
The Alta says : " Kilkenny has not
seen such a lively time since the cats
fought down to the tips r of their
tails." r This same Alta further says :
''Miss Annie Baxter, Democrat, was
elected Clerk of Jasper county Mo.,
by,a majority of ,6,000, ,butj un gallant
Julius Fisher,, her Republican oppon
ent, will contest her election." If J ale
is single he might arrange with ber
o get a support out of the office by
tnatrimony we should think.
