VOL. r a t,eich, s.rnumiDrsrt t.a. nt ojR-3r 3 , 1391. -N"0. 79 REWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITY. What Our Reporters See and Hear Worth Giving to Our Readers News in Brief. See notice of proceedings for di vorce. Next week will be all bustle in Ral eigh. The people's sovereigns will be upon as, to whom we say "all hail." The Board of County Commission era will meet next Monday. It will be one of the most important meet ings of the year. Warrenton, N C , is growing as a tobacco market. About three mil lion pounds were sold there hut year. Chas. D. Heartt, Chief of Police, has been busily engaged today in ar ranging licenses for those who have secured licenses to retail liquor. Workmen are progressing rapidly on the Electric Railway on Blount street. The weather is fine for the business and we may expect that rapid headway will be made. All the State officers have finished their reports and are now waiting on their oars for the representatives of the people to review them. We hope the verdict of "well done, good and faithful servants," may be awarded. In our notice of the death of Gen, P. B. Hawkins yesterday, we stated that he was supervisor of the census in this district; this was an error. Mr. Madison Hawkins, or rionlersoa was the supervisor. The report for the North Carolina Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind shows the number of pupils since last report to b j as fol lows: Deaf mutes (tuale) 82 Deaf mutes (females) 82 Blind (males) 7t Blind (females) 58 Total number, 293 Of this number 88 were colored. A plea is made in the report for en larged facilities for the care of r hese unfortunates, not one half of whon in the State are being cared for in the institution. It is now filled to its utmost capacity. The Board of Trustees r commend the erectiou of buildings for the in ptitution ou the one hundred seres of land appropriated to it by the last Legislature which adjoins the Agri cultural and Mechanical College lands, and suggest that the said lands could be worked to advantage by the combined pupils and both be instructed in agricultural arts by the A. and M. College. The expense of the institution per capita is moderate compared with other institutions. They say an appropriation of fifty thousand dollars a year will be re quired to run the institution. The terms of office of Messrs. Jas. A. Briggs and J. M. Betts, as trus tees, expired Jan. 1st this year. Trus tees will necessarily be chosen to fill the vacancies. The report makes a good showing for the management. Personal Mention. Mr. Madison Hawkins, of Hender son, came in this morning with the body of his brother, Gen. P. B. Haw kins. Mr. Walter B. Boyd, of Warrenton, is in the city in attendance upon the funeial of Gen.Phileuion B.Hawkins, his father in law. Captains C. M. Cook and Richard Tarborough, Mr. T. 8. Spruill, Mr. W.J.Hawkins, Jr., and Mr. Thos. White, of Louisburg, came in this morning on the R. & G. R. R. aceom panying the remains of Gen. P. B. Hawkins. Miss Birdie, the only daughter of Dr W. The check girls at the Valley street bleachery in Providence, R. I., have a serious grievance, according to the Washington Star, against their uu feeling employer. This grievance is nothing less than the fact that aa an feeling, unromantic,"soulless, misan thropic employer has had the auda city of putting a stop to their flirta tions with young men across the way by painting the windows of the rooms in which they worked I The girls declared they could have tolerated any other kind of painting but one, and with rising anger and elevated noses they indignantly left the premises, swearing beg pardon, vowing never to return until again accorded what they claim is a pre rogative of their sex. The Old Swallowed Watches. Thirteen Pittsburg Dispatch. James McFadden, of Ben Springs, Cal , once captured a beautiful speci men of a snow owl which measured four and one half feet from tip to tip of wing. He sold him to a jeweler, who exhibited him in his show win dow. Everything went well urtil one day when the jeweler missed a tray of watches. A thorough search failed to reveal where the missing watches were. While the jeweler was excitedly hunt ing for the timepieces he heard a muffled ticking. Putting his ear to the breast of the owl the ticking was distinctly heard. In his anger the jeweler decapitated the bird, and on opening its stomach discovered thir teen gold and silver watches. Six of the watches were in an ex cellent state of preservation, while seven of the number were in vaiious stages of similation. On opening the gizzard a fourteenth watch was found 1 The sides of the watch had been digested, but the hands and face were still intact. The hand indicated 11:45. This was the identical time when Mr. Fadden captured the owl The Insuppressible, of London, the organ of the McCarthyite faction of , the Irish party, says: "Mr. Pamell wants no vindication resulting in the annulment of the O'Shea divorce.
