The Great Georgia Minstrels drew a very large house at Hide's las night, The down stairs was well filled, and the first and second galleries v. ere packed. The pe formance was a very satisfactory one, and the applausand laughter were almost incessant. The jobes were fresh, the singing good and the dancing firstclass. Parker, returned yesterday from his holiday trip to Washington nd Richmond, where he has been visiting his many lady friends in the above named places, Mr. G. A. Jones left today for the eastern part of the State for a few days. Mr. Jones is a clever young man, We are glad to learn he will soon re turn and take a position with the firm of Jones & Powell. Col. James Norwood, of Hillsboro, was in the city yesterday. Prof. Weatherly, of the Agricul tural and Mechanical College, who has been on a holiday vacation, has returned. Mr. Geo. H. Williams was out on the streets today for the first time in thirteen months having been oon fined by sickness. Hon. Wharton J. Green is in the city. Dr. W. A. Wood, Superintendent of the Insane Asylum, has returned from a visit to Scotland Neck. Mrs. J no. Gatling is hopelessly ill at her residence just east of the city. Jin Examination to fill a vacancy in the Centennial school will be held in the building Saturday, the 10th inst., at 9 a. m. 2t E. P. Moses, Supt. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY. The People's Representatives at the Helm of State. In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and laws of the State, the General Assembly con vt ned at 12 o'clock today. The Senate was called to order by Lieut. Gov. Holt. Prayer by Rev. L. L. Na6h, D. D., of the Uentral M. E. Church of Ral eigh. At the conclusion of prayer Lieut. Gov. Holt delivered an address of welcome. He congratulated the Sen ators upon the auspicious timo at which the General Assembly met. We had abundant harvests and the out look of our people good. He regret ted that while our people were com paratively happy, there should be an effort on the part of a portion of the National Legislature to bring about disi-ontenf. He cordially welcomed the Senators. The clerk of the Senate then called roll of districts and the oath of office was administered by the Lieutenant Governor to the different Senators as their credentials were presented. The Senators from the 28th,39th and 42d districts did not have their ere dentials, they being in their trunk which were detained on the road On motion, the Senators were sworn in, their credentials to be delivered on arrival. There is only one colored Senator A. L. Alston, of Warren and Vance. Fifty Senators were reported pres ent. The election of Principal Clerk was gone into and Eobt. A. Furinan, of Buncombe, was unanimously chosen. The election of Reading Clerk was proceeded with and resulted in the election of George E. Pell, of Wins ton, by an unanimous vote. Jno. H . Hinnant, of Johnston, was chosen Principal Doorkeeper unani mously. Capt. A. M. Noble, of John ston, was selected as assistant door keeper unanimously. Mike Bradshaw, of Randolph, was chosen Engrossing Clerk by an unan imous vote. The organization of the Senate hav ing been completed the newly elected officers were sworn in by the Lieuten ant Governor. The Senator from Iredell offered a resolution that a message be sent to the House of Representatives inform ing that body that the Senate had organized and was ready for busi ness. The Senator from Iredell offered a resolution for the appointment of a committee on rules; adopted. The rules of the last Senate were adopted temporarily. Resolution to invite the clergy of the citv to ODen proceedings with prayer; adopted. A resolution was read providing that members draw for seats; placed on calendar. A committee of two was appointed to wait on the Governor in conjunct ion with a committee from the House and inform him that the General As sembly was now organized and ready for business. The resolution concerning drawing for seats was taken from the calendar and defeated. The Senate adjourned until tomor row at 11 o'clock. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. At 12:05 the House met, and Mr. T. B. Womack called it to order. He stated that he did so as clerk of the last House, but having resigned that position to accept another (a judge ship) would only proceed by unani mous consent. This was of course given After a prayer by Rev. Mr. Perry, a member from Chatham, the roll of counties was called and the members coming forward, were sworn in by Judge Robert W. Winston, of the Superior Court. The signatures were then placed upon the book. There were only a dozen Fpectators in the galleries, and never did a sen I slon open more quietly. The mem ber from Buncombe did not swear.but 'affirmed." There are 17 democrats and 4 republicans who were members of the last house. Not many absen tees were noted this morning and only one was reported as sick. A number had left their certificates of election at home, but no objection was made to their taking tbo oath. I. O. O. The reports of the different officers for the last term wore read and ap proved by the lodge. We are authoritatively informed that the finances of the lodgo are in a most prosperous condition while the numerical strength is increased at every meeting, the lodge having upon its "!roll one hundred and sixty five members "The Tale ov the Dkad" as it is related by Aiden Benedict in his "Fabio Romani," is a very interesting story. The interest is much strength' ened by the dran.atic production of the piece. To witness this play the theatre was crowded last nisrht. The company is a strong one, and fully capable to give a thoroughly good representation of the play. The double role of Fabio Romani and Conte Csare Oliva was assumed by Mr. Walter Lawrence.
