The estimate generally placed up on the estate of the late Paul 0. Cameron, Esq., is about $1,250,000. While there is a considerable num ber of cases of measles in the city, it is said to be of a mild type. There is no cause for alarm. The General Assembly has gotten down to hard work. They seem to be in earnest so far as pushing mat ten are concerned. A considerable number of the mem bers of both Houses of the Legisla ture have been suffering with severe colds, during the past few days, necessitating absence from their seats. Some think it the prevailing "grippe." Attention is called to the adver tisement of Mr. J. S. Wynne, secre tary, of the annual meeting of stock holders of the Raleigh cotton mills which takes place on Jan. 28th, 1891. The daughter of Mr. A. L. Ferrell was taken ill and fainted this morn ing at the Murphey school. Some alarm was caused to her friends, but we trust nothing serious will result. The Board of Aldermen will hold a called meeting tonight to consider a matter of great importance to our city, and every member is expected to be present. Action must be taken at once, or the city will loose one of the finest opportunities ever presented for its acceptance. Can you do it f Do what ? That sum of Whiting Bros. It will be au in teresting event and doubtless a large crowd of spectators will be present There will be no contest, as Senator Vance doubtless will receive a very large majority. The Street Car Railway is being rapidly pushed. There was soma lit tie delay, during a few days of last week on account of inclement weath er, but, as the present week has opened clear, we may hope to hear of " mnfth headway. We are promised that the new system will be in work ing order in a few weeks. Let us fall be patient. We are glad to learn that work on the Petersburg and Ridgway railroad, Is progressing rapidly, and that it will not be long before a new and shorter route will be opened between Raleigh and the "Cockade City. This will be of great benefit to our people, as the present schedule is by no means reliable as a means for rapid transit in the way of passengers and mailB. There seems to be more trouble among the resident and pirate oys tp'rmen in the Sounds of Eastern North Carolina. It is to be hoped, that the bill now pending in the General Assembly will remedy the difficulty. It has been already too long, a source of contention against the "peace and dignity of the State." The death of George Bancroft, the groat historian, statesman and ' nnm.intan tnnk nlace in Washington City last Haturday evening. He was born iu October 1800. He was at one time, minister to Great Britain, and also minister to Germany under Preei riAnt. Jnhnsnn. H was better known as the author of the History of the United States. Skating Rink. One of the prominent State officials it is said, will act as 'best man," and a leading society ady of Raleigh will be one of the brides' maids. May great happiness attend all concerned. Y. M. C. A. It is a matter of deep regret, that while in some other cities and towns of North Carolina, the Young Men's Christian Associations are in a flour ishing condition, there is a complete let down of the Institution here There should be no good reason for this. There is not in the State a more religious or a more moral community than ours and it is indeed a little sin gular that an association so well cal culated to promote good, should be allowed to languish. We should be able at the Capital of the State to sustain an association on a firm and lasting basis. We should have a first class building amply provided with all the appliances necessary to inter est our young men in the way of in nocent paet-times. Let our people look into the matter, and let us not be left behind in a matter of so much importance to all citizens. Who will start the movement and aid in mak ing it a grand success. Personal Mention. Mrs. Mary J, Bellamy, who has been dangerously ill, has somewhat improved. Collector E. A. White who for sev eral days has been on the sick list 1b able to be on duty again. R.B Hunter,Esq.,a well known news paper man and Educator, of Western North Carolina, at present State Lec turer of the Farmers' Alliance, is in the city today. He reports the or der in a flourishing condition in all parts of the State. We are very sorry to learn that S. M.
