JVhat ' Our Reporters See and Hear Worth Giving to Our Readers News in Brief. The Governor has forwarded to Senator Vance his commission for the next tlx years from March 4th, 1801. The matter of a new opera house is gaining in popularity and there now seems to be some chance for its ac complishment. We mast think the investment will be a paying one. -Mr. James W. Allison, of Ports mouth, Va., has accepted a position as telegraph operator to general Manager Winder, and will make his headquarters at Raleigh. The work on the roand-house at the Raleigh aui Gaston Depot still continues, and all traces of the recent fire will soon disappear. All the lo comotives, but three, have been re paired and are now as good as ever, The loss by the fire will be small in comparison with 'the first reports. All men are most cordially invited to attend tne young mens prayer meeting tonight at 7:30 o'clock which will be held iu the Bible class rooms in rear basement of Edenton Street M. . Church. The subject The Bin of OmisBion The Sin of Commis sion will be studied by the brethren. A hearty welcome to all. A complete outfit of the rolling stock, &c, for the Egypt Coal Min ing and Railway Company has ar rived at the depot of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. One of the loco motives the Carthage is a beauty and is of a curious design. It has four driving wheels, but only two wheels in front. Although Bmall in design it is said to possess drawing powers equal to much larger engines Notice, D. of R. There will be a called meeting of Ruth Lodge, No. 4, D. of R., O. 0. F. to night, (Friday) January 80th, 1891, for the purpose of confer ring the degrees and voting on amend ments to the By-laws. Every member is earnestly urged to be on hand. J. N. McRary, N. G Whose Is It? This morning a colored man named Mcllhaney who stays about the stall of Mr. W. R. Crawford in the market picked up a set of good buggy har ness on th,e Hillsboro road opposite St. Mary's school. The harness is al most complete and seems not to have been much worn. The finder left it at Mr. Crawford's stall for identifica tlon. The Weldon Farms. The penal institution committee, of the General Assembly which left here yeBterday afternoon for Weldon, con sists of ten members. They go for the purpose of examining into the work ings of the State farms on the Roa noke river, which are operated by convicts from the penitentiary. The committee, on their return, will no doubt present a most interesting re port of their trip, with such informa lion as will be of the utmost value to the Legislature and the public gen erally. Committee Appointed. Mrs. J. B. Batch elor, President of the Ladies Memorial Association, has appointed the following committee to assist in regard to the bill now pend ing in the General Assembly concern ing the Soldiers Home. Mrs. Gov. Jarvis, Mrs Judge Shep herd, Mrs, Judge Clark, Mrs. E. Mofflt, Mrs R. D. Gilmer. Mrs. Col Olds, Mrs, Col. Kenan, Mrs. Garland Jones, Mrs. Ayer, Mrs, Win. Cram "Mrs. William Boylan, Jr., Mrs. Arm istead Jones. Apples Are Too High But Bananas and Oranges are cheap at D T. Johnson's and he has a fine stock on hand today, r Phone 8. Where, Ob, Where, Is the Union Depot? Every now and then fresh calls are made' upon us to know, "when did you hear anything about the New Union Depot or Station?" We go down to Nash Square and look over at the mournful looking vacant ground, cleared off about one year ago. We turn back and leuiember that it was in July lbSD that the movement for a Uaion Station began. And then! Well, then we look over the newspaper files and And traces at ong intervals, and then! We stop. Talk about a Southern Exposition, a new Opera House, a Great Hotel, Electric Cars, etc. But where, oh, where, is the Union Depot 1 Personal Mention. Attorney General Davidson has re turned to the city from Washington, D.C. Dr. Geo. A. Foote, of Warrenton, is in the city. We are glad to learn that Dr. L. G. Broughton, of Reidsville, sick with typhoid fever, is thought to be im proving. , Col. Fred A. Olds left, this after noon for the eastern part of the State on official business. Mr. J. N. Hubbard, steward of the Agricultural and Mechanical College, who has been quite sick, is at his poBt again. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Busbee have ar rived in the city, from their brida' trip. They will receive their friends on tomorrow afternoon from three until six o'clock. No cards. Dr. W. J. Courts, Senator from Rockingham, has returned to his seat much improved. Mr. James S. Battle from Rocky Mount, is in the city looking in fine health. Mr. P. Pond, of Southern Pines, came in this morning. He says there is a larger number of northern peo ple at the Pines at this time than at anytime before. Col. W. F. Green, of Franklin coun ty, is in the city. A. Police Wagon. Raleigh needs a Police Wagon so that an urgent call day or night might be quickly answered. As it is now the police must either be delay ed or hire the first conveyance they can find. The horse to draw this wagon could be taken from some one of those belonging to the fire depart ment. In addition to the use of an swering urgent calls, in our judgment this wagon should be used by the Mayor and Chief of Police ani Chair man of Street Committee in riding over the city at least once or twice each week for general observation. We mean no reflection upon either of these worthy officers when we ask how can they know much about the city from their offices. They cannot afford to neglect their offices for the length of time it would take to walk over the city, and hence they are seldom seen in and around the highways and hedges. We make a specialty of fine candy. Barbee & Pope. Rer. J. P. Barrett. We Bee by the Norfolk Ledger, of Jan. 28th, that Rev. J. Presley Bar rett, D. D., of the Christian Sun of this city, preached in the People's Tabernacle in that city that night. Col. F. II. Cameron. The Richmond Dispatch, in pub ishing the annual meeting of the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, chronicles the election of Col, F. H. Cameron, of Raleigh, as one of the directors of that company for the en suing year. This is a vigorous South ern corporation and Col. Cameron is its very efficient representathe in North Carolina. Secured. It can almost be said within the bounds of certainty that the proposed subscription of $10,000 towards se curing the location of the Southern Immigration Bureau in Raleigh, and the consequent advantages accruing from it will be obtained. To the sum of $6,000 heretofore subscribed the Seaboard Air Line have added $2,000, making the total thus far $8,000. This leaves only $2,000 more, which we have no doubt will be subscribed in a day or fo, if it has not been already pledged. This is splendid news for our people. It is a lift for our city of which we should all feel proud . Idle Boys. Mayor Thompson has determined to put an end to the crowds of idle half grown boys loafing around town and more particularly around the market, creating a nuisance by con gregating around whatever excites their curiosity or invites their sport ive proclivities. If these boys have nothing to do the street is no place for them , and if they continue street loafing they are almost certain to be come criminals, if they are not al ready Buch. The mayor sent one to the work house for 30 days this morn ing, and others will follow. He is de termined to break it up. Shocking Accident. This morning about 1 o'clock, a col ored man named Henry Jackson was killed near the round house of the Raleigh and Gaston Depot. He had attempted to step from the tender to the locomotive and, in doing so, fell beneath them. I he strangest part of the affair is that the man was not injured to all external appearances, except that three of his fingers we: e badly crushed. It i9 thought, how ever, that he sustained such internal injuries as were the cause of death. Jackson was about 40 years of age and was from Pittsboro. Capt. Hor ton saj s he was a most faithful hand. Don Caesar de Bazan. A large and highly appreciative au dience greeted the appearance of Sal van! last night in this splendid dra matic production, and all were en thusiastic in praise.' Balvinl is un doubtedly one of the finest actors now on the American stage. Aside from his dramatic powers of a tragic character he can insert at intervals such veins of humor as to produce even merriment among his hearers. In a word, his rendition last night was a most complete success. Tonight Salvini will appear in the beautiful drama of "A Child of iJa pies," a cast which displays his great artistic powers to a high degree. It goes without saying that Metro politan Hall will be crowded. Re served seats on sale at MacRae's drug store. W. II. & R. S. Tucker A Co "TO THB TOUKO MBN.' A Simple Story. The success of some people is won derful. They seem to get on in life much better than their neighbors. All their efforts are successful; and say, oh my, if I could succeed like they do. Some people fail at all things. Nothing succeeds with them; the story is simple. It is not luck, but it is brains, push and pluck. Such people are decided when they go at a thing. They don't say, well, I don't know; but they seize it at once. When they come in Swindell's store they don't say, I will not get a shirt now, will wait, but take all they want at once. The other fellow who is undecided says, well, I will wait. You know people who never succeed and you know people who do succeed in all their undertakings. We are now having special sales of white shirts, ladies felt hats, handkerchiefs and hosiery, at D. T. Swindell's. A Defaulter Makes Restitution. Columbia, S. C , Jan. 26. Ex-Ad jt, and Inspector Gen. it L. Bonham made erood to the state the $5,258 ! shortage in his account up to this time.
