It is a matter of congratulation tbatf the institution was self sustain ing during the last year. This is .right these criminals should be used so as to be self-supporting. The num ber is multiplying too rapidly for them to be supported at the expense of the State Treasurj . The report is a good one. V Reception Last N ight. Mr. and Mrs. John W. These visits .have been made by Mr. Crowder at his personal expense in the matter cf buggy hire, fee. Saunders had added a bright epoch to the His tory of North Carolina, which will commemorate his name to the rising generation. Long life and complete happiness to him. While the debate on the Soldiers' Home appropriation in the Senate yesterday, was animated, yet it was pleasant to note that everything passed off in the best humor. There was of course, some difference of opinion on the method for carying out the provisions of the bill, but none whatever on the main object In view. All agreed that the small ap propriation asked for should be made. It was a noble act, and voiced the sentiments of all true lovers of North Carolina. Want of patriotism is not a charac teristic of the present General As sembly. Judge Schenck, of Greens boro, who has done so much in aid of the Guilford Battle Ground Associa tion, bas been in the city, for several days, nrging the passage of a bill for the small appropriation of $20, to place the remains of Gen. The Committee Report $8,500 for the Immigration Bureau. There was another-meeting of citi zens at the Mayor's Office last night called for tke purpose of hearing the report of the committee appointed to solicit subscriptions in aid of the u a i-j. i v i .. . i scheme to obtain the location of the i Southern Immigration Bureau in Raleigh. Maj. R. 8. Tucker was chairman. Mr. J. N. Holding, on the part of the committees, reported that the sum of $8,500 had been subscribed mainly by the principal business men of the city, and he thought that the remaining $1,500 could easily be ob tained by energetie .exertion on the part of the canvassers. A committee consisting of Messrs R. H. Battle and W. W. Upchurch were appointed as a committee to so licit aid from the city banks. The collecting committees met at the Yarboro House this morning at 9;30 o'clock, and a meeting will be held at the Court House tonight at 8 ! o'clock. All interested are invited to attend. Attention! Emma Williams, Rec. Sec Attention Sir Knights. Regular meeting of Raleigh Com mandery, No. 4,tonigfet at 7:30 o'clock sharp. Conferring of the order of Red Cross. Banquet, come. The Yancey & Stronach Parade. Fayetteville street was enlivened to day by the passing of Stronach the in domitable auctioneer, with his drum corps, with his cavalry for sale. The kettle drum and red blanket always attracts the crowd, even the printer stops sticking type to look at the passing caravan. A Building for the Use ol Legis lative Committees. Correspondence of the Visitor. Your article in yesterday's paper suggested the right idea, The State should have ample room for their legislative committees to do their work. In Colonial days when not much legislation was necessay and the number of lobbyists so numerous, the committees could meet and trans act their work in the legislative halls, butnow with the multitudinous bills to consider they should have a room where they can meet and consider measures for the good of the State without being subjected to all man ner of interruptions from outsiders. I do hot second your notion to erect a building on the capitol square. There is ample room In rear of the Agricultural and Supreme Court buildings where a building of suffi cient dimension can be erected that will give necessary room for all the committees to have a regulai place of meeting. At every session of the Legislature, after the committees are appointed, they have to skirmish around to find . a room in which to hold their meetings. This should not be so. It is hoped that some member will read this article and then intro duce a bill looking to that end. The Supreme Court and Library building was erected at a very small cost, '(about $10,000) and a building neces sary for the purposes named might be erected for about half that sum. It is hoped that you will keep agitat ing this matter until steps are taken for the building. XXX. A H HICKS,No223 Wilmington st. w opposite Denton's corner. Fresh Fish and Oysters.
