XJie Crocus. "Rest, little sister," her sisters Ba id Violet purple, and wild rose ml "Rest dear, yet, till the sun comes out. Till the hedges hide, and the grass blades sprout. We are safe in the kindly earth, and warm In the upper world, there arc sleet and storm. Oh, wait for the robin's true clear note, For the sound of a drifting wing atiout; For the laughter bright of an April shower To call and wake you, sweet Crocus flower." But brave heart Croons said never a word, Nor paused to listen for note of bird Or laugh of rain drop. In rough green vest And golden bonnet herself she dressed. By the light of a glowworm's friendly spark, And softly crept up the stairway dark. Out through the portal of frozen mold Into the wide world, bleak and cold. But somehow a sunbeam found the place Where the snow made room for her lifted face. Madeline S. Britlges in Ladies' Home Journal. A Church Closed by a Sheriff. Chicago, Feb. 19. The raising of revenue by taxation involves some queer schemes, in the city of Havannah the tradesmen are compelled to pay a certain sum an nually for each letter on thuir sign boards and announxements. Saxony surpasses even that ingenuity of ex action, for there a law has been puss ed recently imposing a tax practical lv prohibitive on the keeping of cats. Texas to the Front. The grandjury last evening returned in dictments against seventy six profes sional gamblers of this city, and every man of those indicted was to day arrested, tried and fined $35 and given ten days in the county jail.
