XJie Crocus.
"Rest, little sister," her sisters Ba id
Violet purple, and wild rose ml
"Rest dear, yet, till the sun comes out.
Till the hedges hide, and the grass blades
sprout.
We are safe in the kindly earth, and warm
In the upper world, there arc sleet and storm.
Oh, wait for the robin's true clear note,
For the sound of a drifting wing atiout;
For the laughter bright of an April shower
To call and wake you, sweet Crocus flower."
But brave heart Croons said never a word,
Nor paused to listen for note of bird
Or laugh of rain drop. In rough green vest
And golden bonnet herself she dressed.
By the light of a glowworm's friendly spark,
And softly crept up the stairway dark.
Out through the portal of frozen mold
Into the wide world, bleak and cold.
But somehow a sunbeam found the place
Where the snow made room for her lifted
face.

A Church Closed by a Sheriff.
Chicago, Feb. 19. Trouble still
continues in the Englewood Presby
terian Church, from which the Rev.
Mr. Williams was deposed a few weeks
ago after a long and sensational trial.
Last night the Rev. John Weston,
who had been appointey by the bres
bytery of Chicago, conducted the
prayer meeting. While the meeting
was in progress, Deputy Sheriff Gal
pin put in an apperance and proceed
ed to read a notice of levy on the
church carpets and furniture to sat
isfy judgments amounting to several
hundred dollars to the somewhat sur
prised worshipers. The services were
allowed to proceed, but at the close
the deputy took charge of everything
in sight, the building was locked and
the deputy took hie departure, leav
ing his custodian in charge.
Attempted Assassination
Buenos Eyres.
1U
Buknos Ayrws, Feb. 2y. Au at
tempt whs made today to assassinate
General Roca, formerly minister ot
the interior. A man fired a revolver
at him, but fortunately the general
was only slightly injured. The would
be assassin was arrested and iui
prisoned. Measures ot precaution
against an uprising are beiug re
resorted to.
Some Vagaries of Taxation.
The raising of revenue by taxation
involves some queer schemes, in the
city of Havannah the tradesmen are
compelled to pay a certain sum an
nually for each letter on thuir sign
boards and announxements. Saxony
surpasses even that ingenuity of ex
action, for there a law has been puss
ed recently imposing a tax practical
lv prohibitive on the keeping of cats.
Texas to the Front.
Houston, Tkx., Feb. 19. Manager
Wilson of the Texas World's fair has
called the committee to meet in Aus
tin on Wednesday next. The com
mittee will then ask the Legislature
to designate a day to hear them and
take up the question of appropriating
money for a Texas exhibit. Chicagoans
will be invited to visit Austin when
the World's Fair bill comes up.
War on Nports.
San Antonio, Tex., Feb. 19. The
grandjury last evening returned in
dictments against seventy six profes
sional gamblers of this city, and
every man of those indicted was to
day arrested, tried and fined $35 and
given ten days in the county jail.
Thin wholesale arrest has not had
any effect on the gambling dens here,
and all arerunning open as usual.
Explaining It.
"Harry," said Mrs. Bloobumper,
"what is the instantaneous method
of taking photographs ?"
"It is a system by which your pic
ture is taken in an instant after wait
ing half a day in the gallery," replied
Bloobumper Munsey's Weekly.
One of the bachelor United 8tates

Washington girl pretty soon. Pairing
with a nice Washington girl is a great
deal better than the paring which
many of the Senators are given to.
