THE ENTER-STATES EXPOSITION.
For the information of those who
want to know under what authority
the Southern Inter-States Bureau
aire acting.and from what source they
derive their powers, we would refer
them to chapter 72, page 627 of the
laws of 1889.
The organization was chartered by
the legislature of that year under the
name of the Southern Inter States
Exposition Society,under which char
ter they duly organized and have
been at work for some time, niatur.
Sag arrangements for holding exposi
tions and inducing immigration into
the south. We hope all those who
have been manefestiug an interest on
this line will take the trouble to read
the act of incorporation. North Caroli
na has been the f avoredState all along
and encouragements should be given
to them rather than otherwise.
Cheaper Fair Will Pay.
To reduce railroad fair would prove
beneficial to the railroads themselves.
If the fair was two an a half cents
per mile, it would soon double the
travel. To a large extent railroad
travel is a luxury with many people,
that is not a necessity, and the use
of it as a luxury would soon grow in
to a necessity with many, and then
anything that is engaged in that
give pleasure is apt to be repeated if
not so expensive as to work a prohi
bition. It would be the best thing
for their own interest that the rail
roads could do to promote their own
interest. We are creatures of habit.
Let us have a reduction and it will
break down a great deal of this op
position and carping and pay the
roads at the same time.

Ban Francisco Examiner.
'n Howard street, the other day. a
benevolent ol J gentleman beheld a
little six year old girl walking grave
ly Along with ;a basket on her arm.
Patting the chubby tot under the
chin, he said:
"And where are you going my pret

"Give thee good day, graybeard,"
replied the midget. "My father bade
me to the shambles hie for a fat
haunch."
"W-what?" ejaculated the old
party.
"Happy thou knowest him the
cood man Skidmore?" inquired the
tiny dame.
'Noo-o," said thegentlcman.much
puzzled. . "You're a quaint little
thing. Come with me and I'll buy
you some candy."
'Alack, I am forbid to tarry, gentle

'Good bye, then," said the old gen

Bless me, what an extraordinary
child," said the gentleman to a by

"Oh! that's nothing," replied the
other. "You see, she's the daughter

family that it comes natural to her,

The News and Observer says: The
directors of the Caroleigh Cotton
Mills Company have for a day or two
past been in conference with the mill
architects and have decided upon the
general plan of the structure and the
size and capacity of the mill. One of
the directors informed the News and
Observer yesterday that they will
have 10,000 spindles and also an equip
ment of looms.
The building will be a two-story
structure and will be large and hand
some and ample for the purpose. The
site has also been chosen and will be
just to the southeast of Mr. W. G.
Upchurch's brick yard on the Caro
leigh .'lands east of the city which
already been secured for this purpose.
It is being arranged for the work to
begin at an early day, as soon as the
weather will permit.
This is one of the biggest and most
solid enterprises that has ever been
inaugurated in Raleigh. The Caro
leigh Cotton Mills Company is organ
ized of Raleigh's most reliable and
substantial business men, with a capi
tal stock or $150,000, and was incor
porated by the last General Assem
bly.
The hum of the spindles and looms
of another big cotton mill will soon
make music within ear shot of our
city.
