NEWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITY.
What Our Reporters See and '
Hear Worth Giving to Our
Readers News in Brief.
What beautiful weather.

Bubo ball at the park this afternoon
between Raleigh and Durham.
Seats are being rapidly taken for
the Old Folks Concert.
Two of Raleigh's popular young '
people will be married tomorrow. i
The churches all had large congre I
pat ions yesterday. j
Numerous gay parties left for the i
river today. We wish them all much i
luck and a safe return.
Several shops and factories have
closed today, to give their employees
a day off.
!" The weather signals.' were put up
this morning for warm and fair weath
er. Watch out for squallB.
The Register of Deeds issued two
marriage licenses this morning, one
white and one colored.
Yesterday was a lovely day. Hun
dreds of children seemed to snjoy
themselves playing in the different
parks.
There will be a very important
meeting of the A.-and M. College Al
liance this evening at 8 o'clock. All
members requested to be present.
A email fry was before the mayor
this morning for throwing rocks in
the street; his father gave him thirty
nine in place of payhag $7.25 into the
city treasury. Boys you must not.
throw rocks in the streets; its against
the law and may cost you 39.
Several parties were talking of
going fishing this morning; an old
man in the crowd remarked that he
hadn't wet a hook in fifty years. We
ottered to wager a Scotch herring that
he bad wet his whistle within a half
an hour. I e mysteriously disap
peared.
From all the arrangements now be
ing so early put in operation, we an
ticipate an unusually interesting en
campment of the State guard the
coming summer. Col. Olds, the quar
ter Master General is losing no time
in looking after matters around
Smithville.
A more lovely Easter Monday than
this has seldom been seen in this sec
tion. A large crowd of young peo
pie of both sexes took advantage of
the occasion for rambles in the coun
try and piscatorial exceisises. The
finny tribe, especially of the minnow
species, suffered immensely.
Now that the Lenten season is over,
the spring trade will commence in
earnest. Our merchants have all laid
in good stocks, and the main aim, of
course, is to dispose of them to the
best advantage. There is no better
mode to secure this than through a
judicious system of advertising and
there is no better medium than the
Visitor, which reaches more homes
in Raleigh than any other paper pub
lished in the city. Try it and be con
vinced.
A force of hands are engaged today
in working the Hillsboro road be
tween Maj. Tucker's corner and peni
tentiary avenue. If they turn up
the loose red soil and then either roll
It. mnack it over with gravel, it is all
well enough. But if the red soil is
merely turned over and left for an
other rain, then it, had better not be
touched. Thm is the general verdict
of all who pass over the road.
We still hear some complaints
about the couditon of the old city
cemetery. It is, however, in better
triila now than it was a year or so
since. And just here, we would call to
mind the fact that very many of the
prominent citizens of years ago are
buried in this cemetery and it would
be a graceful act for the surviving re
latives to see that they are better
cared for. It is bacred spot in many
particulars, and should not be neg-Jepted,
Serious Accident.
Just as we go to press we learn that j
a colored boy while out huntiug shot
and killed another on the asylum I
road, south of the city, about twelve
o'clock today. It is stated that the
boy was shot through the heart. It
was an accident We have no particu

Slight Accident.
The south bound train leaving here
at C o'clock was derailed near Garner
this morning, several cars off the
track. The regular passenger train
from Goldsboro has been delayed. A
wrecking train has been sent down to
the place of the accident.

The 'following telegram was re
ceived at noon today by Mr. W. S.
Stallings, Secretary of the Y. M. C. A.
which explains itself:
Cancel engagement, on account of
sickness. W. P. Fife.
Funeral of Mr. N. V. Denton.
The funeral of the late Mr. N. V.
Denton was held from the First Bap
tist Church yesterday afternoon. A
large crowd of relatives and friends
were in attendance. The services
were conducted by Rev. Dr. Carter,
pastor of the church. The following
gentlemen acting as pall bearers.
B. P. Williamson, W. M. Boylan, E.
A. White, Geo. W. Wynne, W. S.
Harris and J. J. Johnson.
A Good Outlook.
We must think that the backbone
of winter has now been broken. At
least- t he long wet season has come to
an eud arid the 6igns are now that for
awhile at least, we are to have some
days of warm balmy spring weather.
This will be glorious news to the farm
ers whose operations have been seri
ously retarded in the last few weeks.
There seems to be a general impress
ion that we are to have a good fruit
year. This is always happy news. In
fact there seems to be no cause for
despondency from any point of view.
Cityolitics.
Much interest is felt in city poli
tics just at this time and many. sug
gestions have been made as to the
best plan to get at a fair and full ex
pression of the wishes of .the people
in the matter of the selection of city
officials. The suggestion that strikes
us as most fair and feasible, is to
adopt the plan that has been found
to work well in other cities; that is,
instead of holding primary meetings
as heretofore., that a primary election
be held during some entire day ac
the regular polling places in each
ward, just as an election is held, with
a sufficient number of poll holders,
selected with a view to the confidence
of the people, and the necessary per
sons receiving the highest vote in
each ward shall be the nominees for
aldermen, and the men receiving the
largest number of votes for the en
tire city shall be the democratic nom
inees for mayor and such other city
Officer as may be voted for.
This plan will put the responsibility
where it belongs and prevent this
slating that is complained of. Let
everybody attend the meeting on
Thursday night.
Boarders Wanted
Two or three gentlemen can get
board by applying at 814 Hillsboro
Btreet. Accommodations good.

are in the midst of unpardonable
lethargy in this respect. We are to
have to have the exposition, it seems,
and, of course, we expect it to draw
among us people from all sections of
the land. Again we ask, what are we
to do with them? Are they to come
and go home with anything but a
favorable idea of the old North State

municipal matters as much as you
like, fellow citizens. It is your privi
lege to do so, but let us not lose sight
of a matter upon which hinges so
much for the credit of our beautiful
city.
Let there be some concert of action
on this matter. It is a matter that
will not down. Our reputation is
staked upon it, and the sooner we
realize it, the better.

Four Good Things.
Dr. King's Royal Germetuer differs from
; ordinary medicines in four very important
inings:
1. It does not taste like medicine. It is
as pleasant as lemonade, and, sweetened,
makes a most refreshing drink. Persons who
object to all other medicines take this with
real pleasure, because it is good.
2. It never nauseates. The most delicate
stomach finds in this a perfect remedy with
out a single objection.
3. It never swaps off one disease for
another. It does not set up one form of dis-
i ease in order to relieve another, as is the case
! with so many deadly drugs.
4. It does not patch simply. It cures.
, den S0UTCL of disease3 in the blood, and re
moves the cause. It does this with an ease
and power that have never been equaled.
Nature, in her secret laboratories, has
never produced a finer chemical compound,
nor imparted to one such matchless gifts of
healing J,t is absolutely without a rival or a
peer ift its superb mastery of disease. It is
truly, as Henry W. Grady said of it, "the
tjltima thule of medicines."
