In Memoty
Of little Effle Dean Iluggins, who died in
this city November, Sd, 1887.
One lonely night, not long ago,
While I sat near an open door,
I raised my head toward the sky
And thought how easy man could die.
Twaa then I thought of things unseen,
'And our darling baby, Effle Dean.
O, how dark! How sad was that night!
I 'When cold death turned out the light
The brightest light that ever shown
In a workingman's humble home.

' And claimed our baby, Effle Denri.
Blessed Saviour, thou art so kind,
To remember us at a time
When our hearts are made sad with grief,
(From which there is a sweet relief.
Then Thou has promised t'o redeem
The parents of sweet Effle Dead,
It was Jesus who came that nigh1 1

And let us give our hearts to Christ,

Then when we have crossed death's cold

We will meet our darling, Effle Dean.

"Some years ago a man entered the
Boatmen's Savings Bank on Second
street, in St. Louis, with a somewhat
diffident air and looked inquiringly
about him, as one not quite positive
of his bearines. He scrutinized the
building closely, looked about the in

to the cashier's desk.
" 'There used to be a bank here in
the old times, he said, 'called the
Boatmen's Savings Institution. I
suppose it is dead long ago; this bank
of course has nothing to do with it?' ,
I " H is the same bank,' replied the
cashiek. 'only the dame is a little
changed.'
" 'Ah!' exclaimed the stranger with
surprise. 'Well, when the old insti

haven't you written us?'
"In Californy: and of course I
thought the $100 was a dead duck,
and it's only your sign that called me
