CONFER- The B ale igh District Sunday School Conference met at Smithfleld on Tuesday the 38th at 10 a. m. in the Methodist Church. The opening was a prayer service conducted by Rev. W. L. Cunnings gim, of Henderson, at the conclusion of which the Conference organized, with Mr. Qeo. S. Prirchard, of Hen derson, President in the chair. On the call of the roll it was found that most of the pastoral charges in the district were only represented partially. The attendance was greatly effect ed by the fact that the District Con fereuce for the Church, takes place the same week at Clayton and most of those in attendance upon it are also delegates to the District Conference. A resolution was adopted fixing the time and place for the next Sunday School District Conference to be the same as that of the District Conference. About Railroads. Twenty nine railroads with a capi talization of $182,495,000 were sold out under iuortcaee foreclosures in the year 1890. The estimated cost of constructing tracks and terminal facilities at the World's Fair is $600,000. Franklin Pope says an electric car propellor on a circular track was ex hibited in New York city fifty five years ago. The Pennsylvania Railway com pany, after several years' trial, have concluded to abandon all kinds of ad vertising except that in regular news papers. Are you paying rent? Then you are losing money every day. If you are prepared to pay a small cash mar gin we can make tne same money build you a beautiful house on elegant lot in the coming section of our city. We have the parties who can and will do this if you will apply to us at once. Send your address for our circular, entitled ''Homes for all on Forty Years Credit." Free by mail. J. M. Salaries and Fees. Correspondence of the Visitor.. When our new Board of .Aldermen come to fix the salaries for the next two years, it is hoped they will make themselves familiar with what they are doing before perpetuating the present exhorbitant fees. For in stance the clerk is allowed to collect a fee of one dollar on a license which the city only charges $2,50 for. And again the Chief of Police gets a com mission on collecting about $12,000, a fee of $1 on every conviction or sub mission and a salary of $720 per an num. How much the commission amounts to is not stated in any of the reports or ordinances and how much the fines amount to is equally as un certain. I am not opposed to a sal ary sufficient for the work done; but think it should be a definite sum and not a contingent ?um; and the new Board should fan, .iarize themselves with what they term "salary and fees" means before they fix the com pensation for the next two years. A Voter. Hebrews Exiled What does all this persecution of the Jews mean ? They are without protection the world over, and any power that sees fit can persecute and ostracise them with impunity. Is there a providence in it f The follew ing speaks for itself. Odessa, April 30. Eight hundred Jewish families have been ordered to quit Kieff forthwith. The well-to-do have already gone, but the poor artisan classes are in the greatest straits. Many are arriving on the Austrian frontier in a destitute con dition, but the Austrian officials re fosa domicile to paupers. The Kieff police accept no excuse, raiding the city with the utmost severity unless bribed to delay ac tion. The daily expulsions from Mos cow number from 100 to 160. On Sun day an exceptional raid was made when 090 were expelled. The rigor Of the authorities frightens away many entitled to permanent resi dence. The effect is felt even in the city, -which is a great centre for Jews with permits to engage in business. The The King's Daughter's The State Convention of the King's Daughter's will convene in the city of Raleigh on Thursday, May 14th, 1891. Mrs. Isabella Charles Davis, the General Manager of the Central Cir cle in New York will be present, and participate in the exercises of the convention. All delegates will be entertained during their stay in the city, and in order that sufficient homes may be secured by the committee, the vartous circles are requested to select their representatives at once and send their names as early as possime to Mrs. J.
