The meat and vegetable market was well supplied this morning. Some extra fine strawberries, of the Sharp less variety, attracted much attention. The alarm in and around Gary about mad dogs still continues. The excite ment in some sections is said to be in tense. A dog must be pretty well b. haved in that part of the county now to avoid the contents of a shot gun. There is said to be a little hitch in the proposed extension of the .North Carolina Ralroad to the site of the Caraleigh mills owing to some oppo sition concerning property through which it will pass. We hope the de lay will be only temporary. The Agricultural and Mechanical College boys bad a game of base ball yesterday afternoon with the Morson and Denson boys; they played six in nings. The score was 29 to 12 in favor of the College boys. An important meeting of the Cham ber of Commerce will be held next Tuesday night, at which matters of great importance will be discussed. It is desired that our citizens gener ally should attend. The usual monthly services will be conducted tomorrow at the church of the Sacred Heart. The lit. Rev. Leo. Haid, O. S. B. i. will administer the Holy Sacrament of Cont rotation during the day. The Rev. Father Francis, O. S. B. will conduct the ser vices. Rev. Dr. N. B. Cobb will occupy the pulpit of the Baptist Tabernacle to morrow morning at 11a. m. and at night at 8 o'clock. A special meeting of the church will be held on Monday night next to make final arrangements for the remodeling the house of wor ship. Every member is requested to be present. Fuueral. Powell has returned from Tarboro where he went to attend a meeting of the Grand Council of the Royal Arcanum which met on the 6th, and adjourned on the 7th. Mr. Powell says that the members had a most delightful time and were enter tained in a royal manner, one of the features being a well gotten up bar becue. Mr. Powell was re elected Treasurer of the order. Mr. J. G. Wright, of Wilmington was chosen Grand Regent and Mr. N. Jacobe, al" so of Wilmington was.selected as Vice Regent. Mr. W. B. Boyd, of New Berne was eletcted Secretary. The sale of building lots in north east Raleigh has been an immense success. The number of lots sold has exceeded our most sanguine expecta tions. The purchasers are such peo ple as any one will be pleased to have for neighbors. We shall continue the sale at present prices until .June 1st. An adjonrned meeting of the Board of Aldermen took place last night, Mayor Badger presiding. Alderman Stronach introduced the following resolutions, which were adopted: Believing it to be the first duty of a government to preserve its credit by electing the best member to ad minister its affairs; therefore, be it Resolved, 1st. That we will care fully consider the men and claims of every candidate offered before this board. Resolved, 2d. That we will not n -commend or elect or retain any one to hold an office under this adminis tration who is able and will not pay his honest debts. Adopted. A petition was. received from S. T. Smith to extend his front on a. line with the Fisher building. Referred to the street committee. Alderman Stronach inc ved that all the officers of the city government be required to render a statement of ac count to the board. Adopted. The .board then proceeded to the election of officers. Alderman Lewis moved that the salaries of all the offi cers be fixed before electing them. Adopted. The salaries were fixed as follows: City clerk $75 per month and fees heretofore allowed. Chief of Police $65 per month and fees heretofore al lowed. The fees of the Collector are allowed by law. The salary of the Janitor was raised from $10 to $50 per month, and that of the Keeper of Market to $50. All the other officials were allowed the same salaries as heretofore. C. W. Lambeth, C. D. Heartt and C.B. Root were re-elected respectively to the offices of Clerk, Chief of Police and Tax Collector W. Z. Blake was elected Street Com missioner, J. G. Brown City Treasu rer; J. N, Holdg, City Attorney; Ham F. Smith, Auditor; T. W.Blake, keeper of city clock; B. S. Jerman, commissioner of sinking fund; W. H. Weatherspoon, clerk of market; J H. Marshall,' janitor; Seth Jones, keeper of city cemetery; Sampson Anderson, keeper of cole red cemetery; W. G. Briggs, city weighmaster. Aldermen Lewis was chosen chair man of finance committee and Alder man Stronach chairman of street committee. The bonds of officers were fixed as heretofore. Mayor Badger called the attention of the board to the amended charter requiring a board of equalization of three persons to be appointed during the present month. Adjourned until next Friday night.
