A recent Census Bulletin gives some very interesting and valuable statistics on constructing and opper ating street railways. It collates the statistics of 10 cable lines, having an average length of 7 j miles and costing $3,636,000 each to construct, it gives the name, of 10 electric lines having an average length of 6.72 miles and costing $2,600,000 each to construct; and of 30 lines of horse cars aver aging 66 miles and costing $750,000 each to construct. The operating expense for the dif ferent lines are for animal power, something over 18 cents per mile of road, to each car; the cable cost 15 cents per mile and the electric cost less than 14 cents. In the estimate, however, in the case of the electric lines, nine of them use the trolly wire system and one is a storage battery line. How much the storage battery line effects the averages in the ten electric lines con sidered the bulletin does not inform us, but we have an impression that, that system is the more expensive, both to equip and to operate. Last winter was the most extraor dinary one of this century in England, and M. Mares reports that the weath er in Algeria was quite as remarkable as in Europe. In many places sow ing was prevented by excessive rain fall, and in others the torrent swept the seeds away. A heavy fall of snow lay on the mountain sides for two whole days, the first snow M. Mares had seen in thirty five years that did not melt the instant it reached the ground. Says an exchange: A Nebraska woman secured a divorce from her husband a few days ago on the ground of bad treatment, hot temper, Sic. The only witness was a young woman who had lived in the family for nine years, who substantiated all the wife charged: The man then to spite the old woman and heap coals of fire on the head of the young wo man married her within twenty four hours after the divorce was granted. A New Remedy For Cancer. The juice of Papaw (Carica Papaya has long been known to have the re markable property of softening flesh, and the leaves are often used by na tives of tropical America for wrap ping around meat to render it tender. Dr. Mortimer Granville believes that this property will prove of great value in the treatment of cancer. He has studied the matter for a consider able time, and has convinced himself that the juice, or its active principles, would prove an effective solvent of cancer tissue when used with some other substance, such, for instance, as periodohyme thoxychinolin. A Wonderful Feat Mr. Bottomly the business editor of the London Review, is entitled to the "Belt," or the "Palm," or the " Cup" or the " Prize," or whatever it may be that may be bestowed upon the champion of the world for an achievement that has not been ap proached in the history of journalism before the world over. He has failed for $1,760,000. Journalism is respec table now. Children Cry fttcherfr Castor Starving Himself to Death. Hillsmllk, Va., May 8th.-The shocking tragedy to be enacted in this village has taken a new phase, and it is thought that Robert L. Til jey will never be huug. On Sum I vy, April 25th, the night of his couvic tion, Tilley ate no supper, and alio refused any food the next day. There was nothing strange thought of this, it being natural that he would not feel much like eatipg. On Monday, the 27th, Judge Bolen pronounced sentence of death upon him, and on the way back to the jail Tilley re marked to the officers that ho "would never eat again." .Up to the pres ent day, which is the ninth, he has never touched a morsel of food. His meals are taken to him regu larly and remain before him from one meal time to the next. All entreaties to eat have failed to make any im pression, and fcr the last few days he has declined to drink any water. His brothers have visited him, and on Saturday last told him that his moth er was preparing him something to eat at home. He replied that it was useless, but that they might come back the middle of the week and bring the wagon to convey his re mains home. Tilley was rather a heavy built man, and he is said not to be very greatly reduced, but is much weaken ed in the last few days. He sent for a barber this morning, was shaved, and asked for his hair to bo cut very close. He was to have been hung the third day of July, but there is a strong probability at present that the officers will be saved the trouble. NoCuangc in the Prico of Stoves - v Philadelphia, May 11. The Na tional Stove Manufacturers1 Associa tion, which has been in convention here for the past two days, concluded its business today and adjourned. A resolution to maintain the price of stoves at the same figure as last year was passed, with a recommendation that whsre goods had been sold at less than cost the price be raised. Another resolution to the effect that four months be made the limit of time for collection on goods sold on credit, with a cash discount not ex ceediugSO percent, was referred to local associations. Bur gaw has raised one hundred dollars to aid the Southern Inter-States Immi gration Bureau in making an exhibit of North Carolina at the World's Fair. Major J. T. Morehead, of Leaks ville, has gone to Europe in the in terest of some very valuable mining property owned by himself and a number of other gentlemen in Vir ginia. The Standard (Concord) says: "A very rich gold mine has been discov ered at the Lowder mines, eight miles from High Point, and arrangements are being made to work it. Monroe Enquirer Register: The other day Mr. F. H. Wolf showed us the poll list and tally sheet of the town election held in Monroe, Janu ary 8th, 1859.
